The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins square off again tonight for Game 2 of their series.

New York opened the set with a convincing win, powered in part by some timely home runs. That result also cashed our top play, which centered on Trevor Larnach — who went yard despite the Twins’ defeat. This time, my Twins vs. Yankees prediction shifts from the batter’s box to the mound with a pitching-focused prop in the spotlight.

Here’s how I’m breaking down Twins vs. Yankees for Tuesday, August 12, along with my best MLB picks for the matchup.

Twins vs Yankees prediction

Twins vs Yankees best bet: Carlos Rodón Under 17.5 outs (+130 at bet365)

I’m not sure what Carlos Rodón has done lately to warrant this number with this price, but I won’t question it. My numbers made the fair price +100, and I’ll play it down to that price point.

The hurler will come into this game having exceeded this total just once, failing to do so in the three starts following the All-Star Break. It’s not like those have come against the toughest tests either.

You can excuse him for a lackluster start against the Philadelphia Phillies, sure, but being pulled after just 4.2 innings against the Miami Marlins with a similar performance against the Texas Rangers raises eyebrows.

I see no reason why the Minnesota Twins can’t replicate this — especially when you consider the brutal temperatures in the Bronx today. There are certainly other aspects I like too, though.

Rodón’s BABIP that exceeds .230 is a pretty large indicator that he’s been lucky compared to what his actual ERA suggests. Because of that, I’ve circled Rodon as a pitcher I expect to regress in the second half of the season.

With pedestrian barrel rate and hard-hit rate numbers, I like the Twins’ chances to run him from the game with relative ease.

Although Minnesota hasn’t had a great season, this is still an offense with a fair amount of power that comes into this game just outside the top ten in barrel rate and above average in hard-hit rate.

There’s enough there to cause him issues in what is simply too large a number.

Carlos Rodon Under 17.5 outs

Byron Buxton HR

With the Twins failing to announce a starter by the time of publication, we’ve elected to ignore the New York Yankees' offensive equation in this matchup.

In lieu of that, I grabbed Byron Buxton to go yard. He hit one last night, and it’s no surprise given that the dimensions of Yankee Stadium are favorable for him.

Although he’s had good historical success against Rodon, he’s yet to get a homer off him; however, the average exit velocity in 17 plate appearances against him suggests it’s a matter of time.
