New York @ Detroit preview

Comerica Park

Last Meeting ( Aug 6, 2012 ) NY Yankees 2, Detroit 7

The Detroit Tigers stormed into the playoffs in 2011 after closing the regular season with a spectacular 30-9 run. This year's edition of the Tigers are starting to show some of the same qualities, at least when it comes to playing at Comerica Park. Detroit will go for its 10th straight home win in the second of a four-game series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. Winners of five straight overall, the Tigers have been dominant at home, winning 15 of 16 games at Comerica since July 4.

The Yankees came out of the All-Star break by winning five of six, but they have been unimpressive since, dropping 11 of their last 17 games. New York has struggled on the road during that span, going 2-6 and scoring a total of 23 runs, but it still maintains a 5 1/2-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles atop the American League East. Robinson Cano has four multi-hit games during a six-game hitting streak for the Yankees. Detroit trails AL Central leader Chicago by 1 1/2 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Phil Hughes (11-8, 3.96 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Rick Porcello (8-6, 4.65)

Hughes was not particularly sharp but limited the damage in his last start, holding the Baltimore Orioles to one run on nine hits in six innings. He did manage to avoid the long ball after coughing up three in his previous three starts and 25 for the year. He beat the Tigers in early June, giving up one run on four hits in his second complete game of his career.

Porcello also struggled a bit last out out, going 5 2/3 innings and yielding four runs on eight hits at Boston. The sinkerballer has not surrendered a home run in his last nine starts, which bodes well against an opponent that leads the majors with with 186. He beat the Yankees on June 2, giving up one run on six hits in six innings. Derek Jeter is 0-for-12 against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera is 7-for-17 with three homers and six RBIs against Hughes.

2. Yankees LF Ichiro Suzuki had his 12-game hitting streak snapped. He had hit in every game since joining the team.

3. Detroit has not won 10 straight at home since June 15-July 15, 2006.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
