Los Angeles @ Detroit preview

Comerica Park

Last Meeting ( Jul 16, 2012 ) LA Angels 6, Detroit 8

In the first battle between last off-season's biggest catches, Prince Fielder gained the upper hand. Fielder's Detroit Tigers held off Albert Pujols' Los Angeles Angels in Monday's series opener at Comerica Park, and will look to repeat the feat as the teams resume their three-game set Tuesday. Fielder reached base four times in the 8-6 victory, then watched as Pujols narrowly missed the game-tying two-run homer in the ninth. The loss dropped the Angels to 2-2 on their seven-game East Coast swing.

Tuesday's rematch features two pitchers who have only 13 major-league starts between them. The Angels' Garrett Richards aims to bounce back from back-to-back stinkers that have overshadowed what had been a sensational start to the season. He'll be opposed by Tigers right-hander Jacob Turner, who will be summoned from Triple-A to make his second start of 2012. He gets the call in place of Drew Smyly, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an intercostal strain.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Garrett Richards (2-1, 4.21 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jacob Turner (0-0, 1.80)

Richards looked like lightning in a bottle over his first four starts, limiting the opposition to six runs in 26 2/3 innings. Since then, the 24-year-old has been hit hard - surrendering 17 runs (12 earned) in only 8 2/3 frames. He surrendered three homers while lasting only 4 1/3 innings in his previous start against Baltimore but was spared the loss as the Angels pulled out a 9-7 victory. Richards has scuffled on the road, going 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in two starts away from Los Angeles.

Turner's only start of 2012 earned mixed reviews. The hard-throwing 21-year-old limited the St. Louis Cardinals to one run over five innings but yielded five walks and needed a whopping 94 pitches to record 15 outs. Turner find himself being given an extended look by the Tigers depending on the severity of Smyly's injury. Turner faced the Angels in 2011, absorbing the loss despite holding them to a pair of runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six in that one.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels OF Mark Trumbo has been on a tear over the past two months, swatting 15 homers and driving in 36 runs in his past 38 games.

2. Erick Aybar and Torii Hunter are the only active Angels to record hits off of Turner. Trumbo went 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts against him.

3. Angels rookie OF Mike Trout has scored a run in eight straight games.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
