The Championship League is back, and Tottenham and Villarreal meet on Matchday 1, with the game taking place at Spurs’ home ground of Tottenham Stadium.

Spurs have been in great form domestically and should continue that into their European campaign, which is why our Tottenham vs. Villarreal predictions are backing the home side to take all three points on offer.

Tottenham vs Villarreal picks and predictions

My Tottenham vs Villarreal best bet: Tottenham moneyline (-115 at Sports Interaction)

Tottenham will be going into this season’s Champions League group stage with huge confidence. Despite finishing 17th in the Premier League last season, they qualified via winning the Europa League. Any expectation that they might have a poor season in Europe looks misguided given how brilliantly they’ve started their domestic season.

Through four games in the Premier League, they’re firmly in the title hunt, with three wins and one defeat. That’s level with Arsenal and only two points behind leaders Liverpool. They’ve already faced Man City and have conceded just one goal across four games. That’s a huge difference from what we saw under Ange Postecoglou.

It's not just Spurs with the fast start; Villarreal have picked up seven points in their first four games. However, under inspection, they’ve faced just one good team in Atletico Madrid and were defeated 2-0, and have picked up just one point in their two games away from Estadio de la Ceramica.

This is a good team that features ex-Spurs man Juan Foyth at the back, but they’re not an elite side. Spurs have shown under Thomas Frank that they can balance their attacking style with a smarter, more conservative defensive style, and it’s paying dividends. They should win this one on home soil.

Tottenham vs Villarreal same-game parlay (SGP)

Tottenham moneyline

Both teams to score: No

Lucas Bergvall 1+ shots on target

As well as our best bet, I expect Villareal to be kept scoreless. Spurs have kept three clean sheets so far, and despite Villarreal’s talent in attacking areas, this Spurs defense has everything: robustness under Cristian Romero, combined with speed under Micky van de Ven.

For the final leg of our SGP, we’re backing Lucas Bergvall to get a shot on target. The Swede put on a masterful performance against West Ham on Saturday, scoring one and setting up another, and he’s started to stake a claim to start every week. He leads Spurs in shots on target in the league this season and is averaging 1.35 shots on target per 90 minutes played.
