The Seattle Sounders are struggling to defend right now. Botafogo tore them apart in the first half with counter-attacks before sitting in a shell after halftime to see out the 2-0 win.
Considering the Sounders must get a result here — and likely a win — to have any chance of advancing, I’m expecting them to throw numbers forward against Atletico Madrid in the hopes of finding goals. It nearly worked in the second half against Botafogo as they outshot their opponent 19-5.
But Atletico Madrid isn’t Botafogo, and Julian Alvarez is the kind of player who can terrorize them in transition.
While the Atleti attack was toothless against PSG, one only has to look back to the Champions League final to see how dominant that team is right now.
And Alvarez actually found the back of the net against PSG, a goal in the 57th minute. Unfortunately for him, it was overturned by VAR for a foul in the build-up, but it showed how quickly he could react when the ball was turned over. He also finished from a fairly difficult angle, exhibiting his lethal qualities in front of goal.
Alvarez has goals in five of his last 11 starts for club and country, and has been involved in four of Atletico’s last eight goals scored as a club.
The Sounders have conceded eight goals in their last three matches, and were overwhelmed in the first half by the Botafogo pace when they lost the ball. Seattle thrives on pinning teams back and keeping the ball, evidenced by having the second-most touches in the attacking third of any team in MLS this season.
Atletico will not allow them that time or space. They will pressure them relentlessly and be quite physical with the Sounders, leading to turnovers and opportunities on the counter. Look for Alvarez to capitalize on one of them, and help his side to a key three points.

Attacking the net isn’t the only way Alvarez helps Atletico Madrid win.
He registered a tackle against PSG, something he’s done in three of his last four starts. Since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, Alvarez has registered 40 tackles won for club and country as he tracks back often to help with defense.
The Spanish side struggled with the Los Angeles heat and a PSG midfield that dominated them. That won’t be the case here.
Seattle have scored just six goals in their last seven matches, and needed a deflected shot to find a single goal against Botafogo despite having 23 shots.
Atletico’s defense and midfield, combined with Jan Oblak in net, will do a better job and hold the hosts scoreless while taking the victory.
