Notes on the Field

This is the last stop before the Masters. As such, the field is somewhat light on top names with many golfers getting a little rest before fixing their focus on the big prize — a green jacket — at Augusta National. That doesn't mean the field is anonymous, however, as several top pros may be looking to iron out a few kinks before the biggest test. Overall, 20 players slated to be in the Masters field are scheduled to play this weekend first. Jordan Spieth won the event in 2021 and is back in the fold to defend his title.

Favorites to win the Valero Texas Open

Rory McIlroy (+750)

McIlroy leads the field to open the week, and while he hasn't come away with a win in 2022, he has been in the thick of almost every tournament he's appeared in. The OWGR World No. 9-ranked golfer had a pair of Top-15 finishes at The Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational between late February and early March before a T33 at The PLAYERS two weeks ago. And even though that result wasn't his ideal, he did finish it off with a sparkling round of 66.

This marks McIlroy's first appearance at the Valero Texas Open since 2013 when he finished as runner-up to Martin Laird.

Jordan Spieth (+1,200)

Unlike McIlroy, Spieth is a regular at TPC San Antonio, winning the Valero Texas Open last year and finishing as a runner-up to Jimmy Walker in 2015. Spieth has been uneven this year, finishing T35 at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play over the weekend after missing the cut at The PLAYERS Championship before that. He'll look to right the ship in his final tune-up for the Masters at a familiar locale.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1,600)

The reigning Masters champ is one of two other golfers with odds slimmer than 20/1 to open the week. Matsuyama didn't play in this weekend's Match Play tournament and hasn't been in the field since finishing T20 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in early March. A lingering back injury forced Matsuyama to withdraw from The PLAYERS Championship. This will be a test to determine his health ahead of defending his crown in Augusta the following week, which makes him a bit of a risky play, especially at short-ish odds.

Corey Conners (+1,600)

The Canadian is coming off a strong finish at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament where he beat Dustin Johnson in the consolation round to finish third behind Scottie Scheffler and Kevin Kisner. Conners won this event in 2019 and set the 72-hole record for the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio in the process when he shot -20 (268). After the tournament was canceled in 2020, he fared admirably in defending his title but still finished in a distant T14.

Notable longshots for Valero Texas Open

Charley Hoffman (+5,000)

Hoffman has made something of a name for himself at TPC San Antonio as a regular fixture among contenders. The 45-year-old may seem a bit long in the tooth, last winning on the PGA Tour in 2016 at... the Valero Texas Open, but he's consistently been in the running. He finished as runner-up to Spieth a year ago and did so in 2019 as well. The tournament wasn't held in 2020, so Hoffman's been a second-place finish in consecutive years and was also a runner-up at the Valero Texas Open back in 2011. He can still be had as high as +6,600 (bet365) but his odds have slimmed since opening the week at +10,000. No golfer has earned more prize money at this event than Hoffman.

Anirban Lahiri (+8,000)

Lahiri had a phenomenal showing at The PLAYERS Championship two weeks ago when he finished second to Cameron Smith. Lahiri was leading heading into the final round at TPC Sawgrass, but ultimately came up short. It was by far his strongest finish to the season after a T74 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and three straight missed cuts prior to that. But, Lahiri had a Top-5 finish at last year's Valero Texas Open, shooting three straight rounds of 69 to finish at -10.
