Devils vs Rangers Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: New York Can't Penetrate Devils Defense

Simply put, the New Jersey Devils are one of the most dominant teams in the NHL while the New York Rangers look to have taken a step back from last year's squad. We break down the matchup in our NHL betting picks below.

I'm still recovering from Saturday afternoon’s New York Rangers loss to the Edmonton Oilers, where the Rangers let a 3-0 third-period lead slip away, losing 4-3. That one stung me, but it should have definitely stung the Rangers even more.

Tonight might be the biggest game of the season for the Rangers because it is a true benchmark of where they are as a team. They welcome in their cross-town rivals — the New Jersey Devils — who are one of the hottest teams in the NHL.

If the Rangers don’t show up to play, they could very easily get embarrassed. I break down their chances in my NHL picks and predictions below.

Devils vs Rangers best odds

Devils vs Rangers picks and predictions

What negative things are there to say about the New Jersey Devils? This team has been absolutely outstanding in all facets of the game, but what’s been most impressive is their defense and goaltending.

New Jersey enters this contest as the best defensive team in the NHL, allowing just 2.18 goals per game. This result is largely thanks to the play of their netminder Vitek Vanecek, who is without a doubt the backbone of this team right now.

Vanecek has only given up eight goals in his last five starts and he is putting up some incredible numbers this season. He is boasting a record of 10-2-0 with a .923 save percentage and a 2.05 goals against average along with a +2.3 GSAx. He's absolutely lighting it up.

On the other hand, the Rangers are very close to having to make some serious changes. It's become evident that is group is not the same as last year's and may be in some sort of identity crisis.

One concern going into this matchup is the Rangers' play on home ice against the Devils' play on the road. The Rangers have lost four out of their last five home games and as a team, they are averaging just 2.64 goals per game at Madison Square Garden.

Meanwhile, the Devils have been unbelievable on the road this season, entering this game with a 9-1-0 record as the away team and allowing just 2.10 goals when not in NJ.

The Rangers' offense has not been delivering consistently and this will be their biggest challenge of the season. I don’t see them scoring more than three goals against a very strong Devils group tonight.

My best bet: Rangers team total Under 3 (-115 at BetMGM)

Devils vs Rangers moneyline analysis

This is a matchup between two squads heading in opposite directions: the dominant Devils vs. the Rangers, who look like a different team every single night.

The Devils have been on an absolute tear this season but some thought it might be a fluke... I can assure you this is no fluke at all. They are at the top of the league in so many different categories, allowing the least amount of high-danger chances while also allowing the fewest shots per game.

Not only are they outstanding in the defensive zone, but the Devils are generating the second most high-danger chances — averaging 14.73 per game — while also averaging the second-most shots on goal (36.4). This is an all-around juggernaut.

There is no sugarcoating it, the Rangers are in a lot of trouble tonight. If they want to have any chance at winning this game, it needs to be their best performance of the season. This is without a doubt the Devils' game to lose.

Devils vs Rangers Over/Under analysis

This game will have a ton of offensive talent between both sides. For the Devils, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier are becoming somewhat of a Big 3. They are putting up incredible numbers this season and truly leading this team to greatness. Between the three of them, they have a combined 74 points and a +38 rating.

For the Rangers, their top scorers are right there with those of the Devils as Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad are combining for 71 points with a +4 rating.

These six players can light up the score sheet on any given night, but the goaltending battle in this game is also a very strong one. Like I said before, Vitek Vanecek has been on a tear and tonight he will go up against Igor Shesterkin, who is sporting a .914 SV% and a 2.49 GAA.

This game is going to have a ton of emotion and physicality since it is the first meeting of the season between these two rivals. Because of all the emotion, I don’t expect such a high-scoring game and I trust both of these goalies to keep the puck out. I like the Under.
