Bruins vs Blackhawks Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Boston Continues to Stifle Opponents

The Chicago Blackhawks’ gauntlet of an opening schedule continues tonight as they take on the Boston Bruins for the second time already in this young season.

The first meeting saw Chicago challenge Boston a bit, although the reigning President Trophy winners held on for a 3-1 win. And current NHL odds are again against the Blackhawks.

I covered the first meeting between these two clubs this year and successfully cashed on the Under, and there is little reason to believe this contest will go any differently. In that article, I analyzed how tremendous Boston’s blue line and goaltending were last year, a trend that has carried into this young season as well.

Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark stopped 20 of 21 shots for a .952 SV% against the Hawks in that opening game. Through three starts, he is now 3-0 with a .962 SV% and 1.00 GAA. So much for that Vezina hangover.

Meanwhile, Chicago is very clearly still in a rebuild. Now, the Hawks do look better than they did last year and have gone through a ridiculously tough schedule to begin the campaign, but the offense remains absolutely lifeless despite Connor Bedard's best efforts.

At 5-on-5, the Hawks rank 22nd in the league in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60). The power play has been even worse, and I suspect their current 1-3-1 formation is going to change sooner rather than later because the puck just remains on the outside with few slot chances other than those created out of nothing by Bedard.

A thin offense that has not been successful with a man advantage is almost always a recipe for disaster against a team like Boston. Chicago’s one chance in this game is its goaltending, which admittedly has been tremendous this year.

It remains to be seen whether they go with Petr Mrazek or Arvid Soderblom, but they each have played at the same exact level. There have now been six or fewer total goals scored in each of Boston’s five games and in five of Chicago’s six.

My best bet: Under 6 (-110 at DraftKings)

We also cashed on this identical same-game parlay in that aforementioned first meeting between these two clubs, and if it ain't broke, don’t fix it.

Of course, -235 is a pretty wide number on the moneyline, but there is not a single advantage Chicago possesses in this game. Boston is better offensively, defensively, in net, behind the bench, on special teams, and in the faceoff circle.

The only two things the Hawks have going for them on Tuesday are playing in the United Center and strong goaltending, but I highly doubt that will be enough to offset all those variables mentioned above. In what has been an uncanny trend for the Bruins thus far this year, we could see yet another 3-1 victory in this matchup.

Bruins vs Blackhawks moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Bruins opened as a –245 favorite and have since been bet down to -235. I think the market will keep pushing this number down, especially considering the Bedard hype and how rowdy the United Center was in the Blackhawks' home debut against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday (a game the Hawks still lost despite the similar line movement in their direction).

That brings us to the total, which somehow opened at 6.5 and has since plummeted to the 5.5-6.0 range. That was a poor opening number that did not last very long, and while we are able to buy in at 6.0, other shops have already brought the total down to 5.5 so I doubt that 6.0 will remain come puck drop.

I would still play the Under at 5.5 if you can grab it at plus money if the 6.0 is no longer available today.
