Offseason roller coaster following disappointing playoff exit
Needless to say, the Oilers' first-round defeat at the hands of the young and inexperienced Anaheim Ducks was beyond disappointing. After two consecutive seasons reaching the Stanley Cup Final, it felt like a monumental step backwards.
Thus far, they've made two big offseason moves: one on the ice and the other behind the bench.
They shipped Darnell Nurse (who'd requested a trade) to the San Jose Sharks and immediately signed the return -- a former first-round pick, Shakir Mukhamadullin, to a two-year deal. Regardless of the return, offloading Nurse's albatross of a contract should be considered a success.
The second big move lives in a more grey area, however. The team fired head coach Kris Knoblauch after the better part of three seasons, subsequently replacing him with the infamous Mike Babcock. Babcock — once heralded as one of the game's best coaches — has seen his reputation shatter following a tumultuous tenure as the Toronto Maple Leafs' bench boss, and a brief tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets in which he and the team parted ways before he'd ever coached a game.
Nonetheless, he's back behind an NHL bench after requiring reinstatement from the league.
Edmonton also re-upped forward Jason Dickinson and defenseman Connor Murphy long-term, further solidifying their core. They also acquired goaltender Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres -- once a highly-touted prospect, now a reclamation project after struggling to progress in the AHL.
Evidently, the Oilers have experienced quite the shake-up in the last two months. But how have these changes affected their odds and futures for 2026-27?

Best Oilers bet: Under 104.5 points (-115)
The Oilers finished with a measly 93 points in 2025-26 — a total that would have put them six points outside of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It's a sky-high line despite the influx of offseason moves, as the team has hit that point total just once (109 in 2022-23) since 1986-87. One time in forty years. They've reached 104 twice this decade, but their average 82-game point total over the last five seasons is well below that line at 102.2.
They haven't made enough changes or improved any weakness of theirs (Levi is a wild card) for me to believe they'll be noticeably better than last season. This could be another season hovering around the 90s for Connor McDavid & Co.
Best player prop: Evan Bouchard to win Norris Trophy
McDavid is either the favorite or co-favorite across most books' Hart Trophy odds, but last season's top-scoring defenseman is a relative Norris Trophy odds long shot.
There are eight defensemen with better odds than Evan Bouchard -- despite scoring 14 more points than any other defenseman and finishing fourth in Norris voting in 2025-26. He has two top-five finishes in the last three seasons. Since the beginning of 2023-24, only Cale Makar has scored more points among defensemen. Bouchard's longshot odds provide fantastic value, and I'm confident that eventually the offensive numbers will overshadow the discourse surrounding his defensive play.
He hit 95 points last season, and if he can hit the century mark, it'll be his to lose.
Connor McDavid odds and futures
Best Connor McDavid Future: To win Hart Trophy
The Oilers' captain is a three-time Hart Trophy and six-time Art Ross Trophy winner, which puts him in the same conversation as a certain similarly high-numbered Oilers captain from the previous generation. Unsurprisingly, he opens as the Hart Trophy odds co-favorite alongside Nathan MacKinnon.
Including the shortened 2020-21 season in which he played the full 56-game slate, McDavid has finished top-three in Hart Trophy voting in each of his last five full seasons (two wins, two second places, one third place). Should he play close enough to a full season, he will almost certainly be a nominee once more in 2026-27. He last won the award in 2022-23, so perhaps voter fatigue will be minimized as #97 looks to secure his fourth career MVP award.
