Aaron Glenn is already making his mark as the new New York Jets coach, and he’s doing so in a somewhat controversial way, announcing that he plans to play his team’s starters in Saturday’s preseason opener. How long they’ll play is an open question, but Glenn has made it clear he wants his team to take every game seriously.
That’s likely to continue a recent trend of the Jets playing hard on defense in the preseason. These exhibitions have shown off not only the Jets' defensive starters and rotational players, but also their depth. Last preseason, New York allowed just 35 points in total over three games.
On the other hand, the Jets have a lot of questions offensively, starting at quarterback, where there are questions over how Justin Fields will perform with his new team. Outside of Garrett Wilson, there are plenty of questions at wide receiver as well. And when Fields leaves the game, Tyrod Taylor is unavailable to take snaps, meaning Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook will be trying to move the ball.
The Green Bay Packers are playing this more like a typical preseason game, but the Jets' approach has me expecting another low-scoring exhibition for New York. I’m taking the Under for Saturday’s game.
