Mike Vrabel is favored to win COY honors, but Neil Parker's picks for 2025 NFL Coach of the Year focus on a former Super Bowl winner who is missing this award in his trophy case.

Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season is in sight, and the Coach of the Year odds have New England Patriots bench boss Mike Vrabel and Chicago Bears first-year coach Ben Johnson at the top of the board.

My NFL picks look at a pair of AFC West coaches I think have a legitimate shot at winning the honor this season.

NFL Coach of the Year odds

Here is an updated look at 2025 NFL Coach of the Year odds. Mike Vrabel (+600) and Ben Johnson (+700) are the betting favorites.

Coach DraftKings
Patriots Mike Vrabel +600
Bears Ben Johnson  +700
Jaguars Liam Coen  +1200
Cardinals Jonathan Gannon  +1400
Panthers Dave Canales  +1600
Jets Aaron Glenn  +1600
Broncos Sean Payton +1600
Raiders Pete Carroll  +1600
Chargers Jim Harbaugh  +1800
Seahawks Mike Macdonald +2000
49ers Kyle Shanahan +2000
Packers Matt LaFleur  +2000

Odds as of 8-20.

Pete Carroll (+1600 at DraftKings

Pete Carroll is already receiving warranted attention in the Coach of the Year market because he brings a winning pedigree and reputation of being a culture-changing leader —and of course — he’s a Super Bowl winner.

Despite all the recognition, he’s never earned Coach of the Year honors.

I value the familiarity he has with veteran quarterback Geno Smith from their time together with the Seattle Seahawks, and the offense should also receive a boost with the addition of running back Ashton Jeanty alongside star tight end Brock Bowers.

The Vegas defense has defensive coordinator Patrick Graham returning, and will be led by stars Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins, too.

After the Raiders finished 4-13 in 2024, there’s oodles of room for improvement, and making noise in the competitive AFC West would pave the way for Carroll’s first Coach of the Year award.

NFL COY long shot: Jim Harbaugh (+2000 at FanDuel)

The Los Angeles Chargers improved from a 5-12 record in 2023 to an 11-6 playoff team in Jim Harbaugh’s first year as head coach, and it was an impressive turnaround on the field, too.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert posted elite numbers, including a career-high 90.2 PFF passing grade, 7.7 yards per attempt, and a 5.7% big-time throw rate, while the Los Angeles defense finished third in PFF grade.

More of the same will position Harbaugh among the betting favorites in the 2025 Coach of the Year odds in short order, with the impressive improvement on both sides of the ball reaffirming his leadership and ability to kick-start a rebuild to create a winning culture.

In addition to checking the highlighted necessary boxes to win the Coach of the Year, Harbaugh also hoisted the hardware in 2011 after similarly turning the San Francisco 49ers franchise around.
