Stanford fans hoping a move to an East Coast football conference would bring out the best of the Cardinal are still waiting.

Stanford went 4-8 in the 2025 regular season, its second year in the ACC, finishing 3-5 in conference play and clearing a 3.5-win total by half a game. The Cardinal enter 2026 facing the same win threshold, reflecting a market that sees this program as firmly entrenched in rebuilding mode following a decade-long decline from one of the Pac-12's elite programs.

Here's a look at the recent history of Stanford win totals, along with predictions on whether the Cardinal will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 3.5:

Brad Powers

Stanford has their third different head coach in three years. I’m not wild about the Tavita Pritchard hire and the projected starting quarterback Davis Warren. While my power ratings project four wins, the Cardinal are only favored in two.

Rob Paul

Andrew Luck’s fingerprints are all over this program, with the hiring of his friend and former backup at Stanford, Tavita Pritchard, as head coach.

Pritchard, who worked at Stanford under David Shaw from 2011-2022 before spending the last three seasons as the Washington Commanders QB coach, takes over a Cardinal team that looks at least two years away from contending for bowl eligibility.

While this year’s team has some talent (Niki Prongos, Matt Rose, Jay Green), it’s set to start Michigan transfer Davis Warren at QB. Warren threw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (seven) for the Wolverines and desperately needs Yale transfer Nico Brown to emerge at receiver. And Stanford has the third-toughest SOS in the country (.643).

Colby Marchio

Ah yes, your father’s favorite ACC team.

The program has failed to produce a five win season in seven consecutive years and has not reached a bowl game in over a decade. It’s tough to see where the Cardinal are today. Growing up watching this program as a juggernaut was a blast, but just like their move to the ACC, times have changed.

With this being Tavita Pritchard’s first season trying to turn this program around, I’m out.

I do not see four wins on this schedule, and I’m actually looking into backing Timmy Chang and the Rainbow Warriors in Week 1.

Dylan Grausz, Stanford Cardinal on SI

Stanford football spent the offseason tirelessly rebuilding its program, hiring a new head coach in Tavita Pritchard, hiring a staff full of coaches with NFL experience and upgrading at several positions such as quarterback.

Those factors alone should make Stanford more competitive and prove to the college football world that they are on the rise. But a tough schedule, with matchups against Miami, Notre Dame and SMU, among others, will make it hard for a rebuilding program like Stanford to churn out wins right away in year one of the new era.

The Tavita Pritchard hire is a clear call back to the glory days of the Jim Harbaugh era. But it'll be rough sailing to start for him and the Cardinal. Stanford opens with a Hawai'i team that won nine games in 2025. Then the National Championship Game runner-up, Miami, visits Palo Alto. Pritchard can reignite enthusiasm in the program, but he faces a brutal schedule to begin this new era.

🔑 Key takeaways

  • A nearly balanced record that splits cleanly by era: Stanford has gone Over its win total seven times in 13 graded seasons, against six Unders and no Pushes. The overall record looks balanced, but the data tells two completely different stories depending on the time period.

  • Five Overs in six graded seasons from 2011 through 2017: During Stanford's peak under David Shaw, the Cardinal cleared their win total in five of six graded seasons while facing totals of 8.5 to 9.5. The program consistently outperformed high market expectations during this stretch.

  • Five Unders in seven graded seasons since 2018: As Stanford declined, the program went Under in five of the seven graded seasons from 2018 through 2025. Win totals dropped from 8.5 all the way to 2.5, and the Cardinal still failed to clear them most of the time.

How Stanford win totals are priced

A one-time perennial Pac-12 powerhouse, Stanford has fallen on hard times with four or fewer regular-season wins in six straight graded seasons.

But there's a glimmer of hope in oddsmakers' eyes; last year's O3.5 came with +150 odds, while this year's Over and Under are a virtual toss-up at -110 apiece. Is the move warranted?  New head coach Tavita Pritchard represents a major shift in Andrew Luck's second year as GM, and he'll be tasked with invigorating one of the ACC's worst offensive attacks.

We'll know early whether this Stanford squad has the goods to turn things around. The Cardinal play their first six games against teams that won 9+ games a season ago, including Miami and Notre Dame. And they'll finish with a three-game road swing (that ends in California) and a home date the following week against 9-win SMU.

Stanford is facing a conference win total of 2.5, with the Over priced at +144 and the Under at -175.

Did You Know?

Stanford is just 5-22 SU (7-20 ATS) against ranked teams since 2019.
