Purdue vs Ohio State Picks and Predictions: Boilermakers Disrespected in Big Ten Battle

The Buckeyes are favored by three touchdowns at home, but the Boilermakers, who have already beaten two Top-5 teams, allow fewer than 21 points per game. Our Purdue vs. Ohio State picks highlight why the road team deserves some more credit.

The Purdue Boilermakers will hit the road to Columbus to face a Top-5 team in the Ohio State Buckeyes. Purdue, 19th in the country, has already beaten two Top-5 teams this season, and a third victory over a Top-5 foe would be legendary for the program.

Meanwhile, Ohio State is 8-1, with a lone loss to Oregon early in the season. Last week, the Buckeyes struggled a bit against Nebraska, winning only 26-17, however, they’ve looked much better since that loss to Oregon, re-asserting themselves as CFP contenders.

Purdue vs Ohio State predictions

Ohio State is really good, but not that good. Purdue is scoring 24.8 points per game while allowing 18.4 points per game, yet it’s a 21-point underdog. Purdue doesn’t even allow 21 points per game to begin with.

While Ohio State will have one of the better offenses that Purdue will face this year, the Buckeyes still don’t deserve that much respect. Offensively, the Buckeyes looked lost against Nebraska for a couple of moments. They’ve only won their last two games by nine points each, with the offense struggling a little bit.

Ohio State should be able to find success rushing the passer as always. If there’s an area where Purdue needs to improve, it’s in pass protection. However, the coverage from the Buckeyes has been suspect at times, as they’ve allowed just under 250 yards passing per game this season.

Meanwhile, Purdue is still gaining 409.7 yards per game. It’s not close to Ohio State’s average of 541.8 yards but it’s enough to at least stick around in games when the defense plays well. Purdue’s defense has allowed 25 fewer yards per game in comparison to Ohio State. With both teams in the Big Ten, the competition has been comparable, too.

Purdue can rush the passer a little bit as well and while it’ll be more difficult against Ohio State’s pass protection, a couple plays here and there will keep Purdue in the game throughout.

The Boilermakers just have a different energy about them when they face top teams. They’re getting too many points here. It’s hard to pass this up. Take Purdue +21.

Despite Purdue allowing just 18.4 points per game, it’s going to be difficult for the Boilermakers to stop C.J. Stroud and the Ohio State offense. Stroud has thrown for 25 touchdowns and five interceptions all year with 2,675 yards passing on 183 completions. He’s really improved as the season has progressed, which you love to see if you’re an Ohio State fan.

On the other hand, Purdue just scored 40 against Michigan State last week. Other than its game against Wisconsin, Purdue has been able to score at least 23 points in three of its last four games. That’s against teams like Iowa, Nebraska, and Michigan State. Struggling against Wisconsin isn’t so bad once you realize Wisconsin’s defense is one of the best in the nation.

Purdue’s Aiden O’Connell threw 54 times against Michigan State for 536 yards. I hope his arm isn’t sore, because, with Purdue trailing, he’ll have to do more of the same. I’ll take the Over here.
