What exactly happened last season, Penn State fans?
The Nittany Lions' win total had gone Over in 10 of 17 graded seasons, one of the more impressive runs in the Big Ten. And then came 2025: a 10.5-win total, a 3-6 Big Ten record and just six wins overall, the largest single-season miss of any program in this series so far (by more than a game).
The market has responded by dropping Penn State's 2026 number to 8.5, its lowest since 2022. Whether that correction is enough, or an overreaction to one catastrophic season, is the central question for Nittany Lions bettors heading into fall.
Here's a look at the recent history of Penn State win totals, along with predictions on whether the Nittany Lions will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 8.5:

I don’t think Matt Campbell will be an upgrade over James Franklin in the long-term. In the short-term, Campbell brings 13 Iowa State starters with him. The Nittany Lions also have an advantageous schedule. They don’t play Indiana, Ohio State or Oregon. They could be favored in as many as 10 games.

The Matt Campbell era in State College should get off to a solid start thanks to a schedule that’s No. 110 in SOS (.483) and avoids Indiana, Ohio State, and Oregon. The Nittany Lions' floor will be high, with Campbell bringing in a transfer portal class ranked No. 4 nationally and full of many of his best players from Iowa State.
The headliner is Rocco Becht, who is one of the most experienced QBs in the country after combining for 83 total touchdowns in three years as the Cyclones’ starter. Other former Iowa State starters now donning the white and blue include running back Carson Hansen, wide receivers Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen, tight end Ben Brahmer, linebackers Caleb Bacon and Kooper Ebel, and safeties Marcus Neal Jr. and Jeremiah Cooper.
Campbell also retained three major Nittany Lions in Tony Rojas, Anthony Donkoh, and Koby Howard.

Welcome to the Matt Campbell era, folks!
Now I can finally enjoy rooting for Penn State, now that Big Game James Franklin is gone.
I typically do not like leaning on a coach having a ton of success in his first year at a new program, but when you bring in 39 players and 24 of them are former players from your previous team, it is hard to ignore the familiarity. Most notably, new quarterback Rocco Becht already knows Campbell's system, which should make the transition much smoother.
Based on the schedule, Penn State avoids Indiana, Oregon, and Ohio State. Their toughest road games come at Michigan on October 17th and at Washington on November 7th.
I do not think asking for nine wins from this schedule, especially with a roster full of players who already know their new head coach's system, is asking for too much.

🔑 Key Takeaways
- A strong Over program with one historic exception: Penn State has gone Over its win total 10 times in 17 graded seasons, against six Unders and one push – a clear long-term Over lean that makes the 2025 collapse all the more jarring in context.
- 2025 was the worst single-season miss in this series: Set at 10.5 wins after an 11-win 2024 campaign, Penn State finished just 6-6. The 4.5-game shortfall is the largest of any Big Ten program. The market has dropped the 2026 total by two full wins in response.
- Unders have been rare at high totals: Only two of Penn State's six Unders came in seasons where the total was set at 9.5 or higher (2018, 2025). The other four misses all came when the number was 8.5 or below, which makes the 2026 total of 8.5 a more historically neutral proposition than the recent collapse might suggest.
How Penn State win totals are priced
Oddsmakers appear to be approaching the Nittany Lions with an intriguing amount of caution this year, which suggests that they're as confounded as just about everyone else.
Last season's mystifying collapse would create enough uncertainty on its own. But when you factor in that Penn State brought in 55 new players, 40 via the transfer portal, how can anyone really know what to expect from a Big Ten program that won 31 regular-season games from 2022-24?
Penn State won't face Indiana, Oregon or Ohio State in the 2026 regular season, which is huge. Road dates with Michigan and Washington will be tough, but the rest of the Nittany Lions' schedule looks quite manageable – and that's a big reason why the O8.5 is a hefty -166.
The conference win total Over is similarly juiced in favor of the books, with the O5.5 at -175 and the U5.5 at +144.
Penn State went just 2-7 ATS as a favorite in 2025, just two seasons after going 9-2 ATS in that same situation.
