LSU hosts Mississippi State on Saturday as a 14.5-point favorite with an 84% win probability, and our Mississippi State vs. LSU prediction is backing the Tigers' defense to control the game.

Bulldogs star quarterback Kamario Taylor is questionable with a foot injury, and LSU has the stop unit to take full advantage regardless of who's under center.

Here are my college football picks for Oct. 17.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Mississippi State vs LSU: LSU -14.5

I’ll play LSU at -14.5 to 55%.

Although Mississippi State has one of the best offenses in the country, ranking fifth in adjusted EPA per play, that production runs through quarterback Kamario Taylor. He’s questionable with a foot injury that clearly limited him against Alabama, while leading rusher Fluff Bothwell is also questionable.

Even a fully healthy Bulldogs attack would be in for a fight. LSU’s defense ranks fourth in adjusted EPA per play and fourth in EPA per pass allowed (-0.26). Despite a lacklustre performance against Kentucky last weekend, I’m still a believer in this Tigers unit because of those metrics.

On the other side, Mississippi State’s defense is 101st in success rate allowed and 99th against the pass, giving inconsistent QB Sam Leavitt plenty of room to work, even with his mistakes.

LSU ranks third nationally in net adjusted EPA per play, and back home after a painful overtime loss, the Tigers will pull away.

Covers COVERS INTEL: LSU’s defense leaves opponents facing an average third-down distance of 8.44 yards, 5th-longest in the nation.

Mississippi State vs LSU Over/Under pick: Under 57.5

The Bulldogs’ passing game has carried their offense, but they're running into an LSU secondary allowing just a 34.1% passing success rate, the sixth-lowest mark in the country.

If Taylor is out or limited, Mississippi State could be relying on a backup against one of the toughest pass defenses it’ll face all season.

LSU isn’t exactly built to light up the scoreboard, either, especially given its QB play this season. Additionally, the Tigers rank 43rd in offensive EPA per play and 63rd in rushing success rate, making long, clock-eating drives more likely than quick scores.

With LSU surrendering just a 36% conversion rate on third and fourth downs, points will be harder to come by than this total suggests.

Mississippi State vs LSU combo

There's a chance LSU’s defense controls the game from the opening snap, and this combo attempts to capture that.

MSU's offense will need time to settle in, especially with Taylor either limited or out, which gives the Tigers a chance to build an early cushion at home.

LSU also owns a +5.4-yard edge in net field position (19th), setting up short fields that will help the Tigers pull ahead while keeping the total in check.

Mississippi State vs LSU weather

A cold front moves through Baton Rouge on Friday, with most forecasts showing it clearing out by Saturday for a partly sunny, cooler day in the low 70s. Expect a breezy north wind around 12 mph, strongest in the morning near the noon ET kickoff.

Some forecasts still keep a lingering shower chance for Saturday, so it’s worth checking again closer to kickoff, but conditions shouldn’t have a major effect on either offense.
