It's been a while since the Auburn Tigers have been this low for this long.

Five straight years of losing records and a pair of bowl game defeats have the Jordan-Hare Stadium denizens restless, but new Auburn head coach Alex Golesh has a friendly September schedule on his side as he looks to return the Tigers to the right side of the .500 mark.

Here's a look at the recent history of Auburn win totals, along with predictions on whether the Tigers will surpass or fall short of their 2026 number of 6.5:

I’m neutral on the Alex Golesh hire. It will be interesting to see how all his South Florida transfers do against tougher competition. Auburn has had five straight seven-loss seasons.

Rob Paul

Alex Golesh brought with him the most important piece from last year’s South Florida team that went 9-3, QB Byrum Brown. Brown was the only QB in the nation to surpass 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in 2025, and he should help Auburn take advantage of the weakest schedule in the SEC.

Brown’s the headliner for a transfer portal class ranked ninth-best in the country, but fellow former Bulls like Keshaun Singleton and Jeremiah Koger will be just as important to beefing up the passing attack. And the run game should be lethal with Brown, Jeremiah Cobb, and transfer Bryson Washington (Baylor), if the O-line clicks.

Golesh also retained defensive coordinator DJ Durkin and one of the SEC's best defenders, Xavier Atkins. As long as transfers Cody Sigler (Arkansas State) and D’aShawn Womack (Ole Miss) hit, the defense should be in good shape.

Colby Marchio

First year head coach Alex Golesh comes over from USF, where he went 23-15 over the last three seasons.

Golesh did an incredible job building the Bulls into a respectable program before making the jump to the SEC. The American is nowhere near the level of competition in the SEC. Sure, USF gave Alabama a scare in 2023, but they still lost. That was also an Alabama team coming off a loss to Texas and looking ahead to Ole Miss the following week. Anywho, I digress.

I know the Tiger faithful are thrilled to have landed one of the country's most underrated quarterbacks in Byrum Brown, arguably the best quarterback this program has had in years. Brown followed Golesh from USF after throwing for nearly 3,200 yards and 28 touchdowns, while adding more than 1,000 rushing yards and 14 scores.

As fun as all of that sounds, Auburn has to travel to Tennessee, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Alabama this season. Good luck getting through that stretch without a few black eyes.

With both the head coach and quarterback adjusting to the SEC for the first time, I lean toward the under.

🔑 Key takeaways

  • Aw, burn: This one's for you, over bettors. The Tigers have fallen short of their preseason win total in each of their previous five regular seasons – and the past two haven't been close, with Auburn coming up 2 1/2 wins short each time.

  • Third time's a charm?: This marks just the third time since 2011 that Auburn carries a win total below seven into the season; it converted the Under each of the previous two times, cashing at +100 and +115 in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

  • Going the wrong way: Auburn had seen its conference title odds improve three straight years, to as high as +2200 in 2025 – then promptly went 1-7 in SEC play last season.

How Auburn win totals are priced

That 6.5 win threshold is a virtual toss-up for most sportsbooks, which speaks to how difficult it has been to handicap this team going into the start of the Golesh era.

As unfair as it might be to say, how the Tigers fare in September will likely set the tone for the season. And while Auburn can't lock in a winning record for the season over that four-game span, a rough start can absolutely put a seven-win campaign out of reach.

Fortunately for Golesh and his prized QB transfer from USF, Byrum Brown, the opening stretch is favorable. Auburn's only "road game" is a season-opening date with Baylor in Atlanta (just over 100 miles away); after that, the Tigers host Southern Miss, Florida and Vanderbilt. A 4-0 start is on the table here.

On the flip side, earning two or fewer wins in that span could spell doom, with five of its final eight coming on the road (a gauntlet that includes games against Georgia and Alabama).

Did You Know?

Auburn's active streak of five consecutive losing seasons is its longest since 1946-50.
