Basketball is so gloriously back, and our NBA AI predictions tip off the 2026–27 season with a three-game slate tonight on Tuesday, October 20.

I trained ChatGPT to create a custom forecasting model that generates a full box score for every matchup before comparing those projections against the latest odds from the best prediction market apps. The model calls for a pair of one-point wins and a blowout victory by the defending champs, who feature as our best pick for opening night.

Below, we break down our NBA picks and score predictions for every matchup, along with our ATS and O/U picks and analysis for the full slate. We also projected the top statistical leaders and compared our AI picks with our Covers projections and NBA expert picks.

Boston gets the win, but Detroit gets the cover in our 111–110 score prediction. The model projects Boston to take about eight more threes, with Jayson Tatum leading the Celtics in both scoring and assists. Detroit has its own offensive engine in Cade Cunningham, whose 23 points and 10 assists keep the Pistons within a possession. That leaves Pistons +1.5 as our spread selection, with a narrow lean to Over 220.5.

Our straight-up call agrees with Tom Oldfield’s Celtics vs Pistons prediction, which backs Boston on the moneyline. The distinction is the winning margin: our displayed score leaves the Celtics short of covering -1.5. Mitchell Robinson and Jalen Duren lead their respective teams on the glass, with Duren projected for 11 rebounds in a game where one extra possession could decide it.

Knicks -4.5 is our best pick for opening night. New York has the largest projected winning margin on the slate, taking this one 123–115. The model projects the Knicks for roughly five more 3-point attempts and three more offensive rebounds than Philadelphia. Jalen Brunson leads New York with 25 points and seven assists, while Karl-Anthony Towns’ 14 rebounds headline a projected advantage on the glass.

That puts us alongside Shawn Krest’s 76ers vs Knicks prediction on New York -4.5. Our 238-point forecast also lands above the 231.5 total, with Jaylen Brown projected to lead Philadelphia in scoring. The Sixers forecast assumes questionable reserves Anfernee Simons, Adem Bona, and Dean Wade are available; their status is the key lineup item to watch before tipoff.

Oklahoma City is our underdog pick in a projected 118–117 finish. This is the fastest projected game of the three at about 105 possessions per team. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 30 points lead the entire opening-night slate, while the model projects Oklahoma City for roughly three fewer turnovers than San Antonio. With the Thunder winning outright in our forecast, we’re taking +2.5 and leaning Over 231.5.

We’re on the opposite side of Geoff Clark’s Thunder vs Spurs prediction, which backs San Antonio -2.5. The Spurs have plenty of firepower in our projections: Victor Wembanyama leads them with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Stephon Castle contributes eight assists. That makes the matchup close, but the model gives Oklahoma City the final possession’s worth of separation.

How our NBA AI predictions work

Our NBA AI predictions use a custom forecasting model built with GPT-6 Astra to project a final score for each matchup using historical scoring results, team offensive and defensive strength, projected rotations, matchup details, and other relevant context for predicting the final score. Player projections use expected playing time and roles to identify each team’s projected points, rebounds, and assists leaders.

The score forecasts are fixed before we compare the displayed scores with the selected Polymarket spread and total to produce our ATS and Over/Under picks. Polymarket percentages are market quotes, separate from the score forecasts. We track results against the original selections and lines at time of publish.

We’ll continue updating the process as the season develops and publicly track every published score prediction, ATS pick, and Over/Under selection.

Odds and market lines are correct at the time of publishing and are subject to change. Not intended for use in MA.
