The Houston Astros will try wrap up April with a sweep of the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers this afternoon.
While the combined scores have hit double digits in the previous two games, our Tigers vs Astros predictions expect a course correction.
Read on for my full MLB picks for this 2:10 p.m. ET clash on Wednesday, April 30.
Tigers vs Astros prediction
My Tigers vs Astros best bet: Under 8.5 (-110 at Caesars)
The Detroit Tigers were cruising into H-Town, having won four straight and eight of 10, but they're in danger of being swept for the second time this season, and the first since a season-opening set against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Their pitching, which sits third in baseball with a 2.97 ERA, has been battered in the first two games in this set, surrendering 14 runs, including in a 6-4 loss on Tuesday.
They turn to rookie Jackson Jobe to salvage a win, and the 22-year-old has been outstanding in April, going 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA.
Jobe has won two straight starts, the latest a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. In that game, he scattered five hits across five innings, surrendering just one earned run while striking out five.
The Houston Astros are rolling, with three straight wins and just three losses in their last 11.
It’s been a scoring bonanza during this stretch for Houston, who have scored at least five runs in six of their last eight wins. It's a welcome change, because the Houston offense had otherwise scuffled to start the year.
Hayden Wesneski was initially penciled in to start, but he's been pushed back, opening the door for 24-year-old right-hander AJ Blubaugh to make his MLB debut. He's posted a 3.86 ERA over 21 innings at Triple-A this season and logged 128 2/3 innings across two minor-league levels in 2024.
The Astros bullpen is among the best in baseball with a 2.77 ERA, and while closer Josh Hader has pitched each of the last two days, the rest of the bullpen can hold down the fort if he's unavailable, especially with Houston getting a day off on Thursday. It could be all hands on deck if Blubaugh's leash is tight.
While the two teams have hit the Over in back-to-back games, Detroit and Houston had gone Under the total in four of the previous five head-to-head meetings.
Both teams had been regularly cashing Unders before this outlier-ish set. Detroit’s Under record was 5-1-2 before arriving in Texas, while Houston had gone Under the total in seven of its previous eight.
Tigers vs Astros same-game parlay (SGP)
We’ll stick with Jobe to add to our SGP. He’s getting a very generous strikeout line of 3.5 Wednesday — with plus-money odds to boot.
Houston isn’t the worst strikeout team, but they’re not exactly making contact all the time, as they rank 13th in team Ks per game. Jobe has gone over this total in two of his three starts and is coming off a season-high five punchouts.
We’ll wrap with Isaac Paredes, who went 1-for-2 with two runs scored in Tuesday’s win. He’s now had hits in eight of his last 10 games.
He hasn’t faced Jobe in his career, but his highest split this season is a .280 average against right-handed pitching.
