Three players have caught my eye, including Grant Holmes of the Atlanta Braves. I also have two plays for the early games for those who enjoy an afternoon sweat!

MLB props for June 21

Cade Horton Over 4.5 strikeouts (+100 at DraftKings)

The Chicago Cubs host the Seattle Mariners in the afternoon portion of Saturday’s MLB slate, and Cade Horton takes the ball for the Cubbies.

The seventh overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, Horton has joined Chicago’s rotation this season as the second-highest-ranked prospect in the organization. He's not disappointed, posting a 3-1 record with a 3.47 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through seven appearances.

His underlying metrics are equally strong. Horton ranks in the top half of the league in expected ERA (xERA), walk rate, and ground-ball rate. Specifically, he’s worth targeting in the strikeout market, as he ranks in the 67th percentile in chase rate and 66th percentile in whiff rate.

Ian Happ home run (+245 at DraftKings)

Sticking with the same game, the Cubs’ Ian Happ enters this matchup in great form. Happ has homered in each of the past two games, and that stretch of strong hitting is likely to continue against Emerson Hancock.

Hancock takes the mound for Seattle and has yet to establish consistency at the major league level. Through 27 career starts, he has a 4.60 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.

This season, his analytics are particularly poor. Hancock ranks in the 17th percentile or lower in xERA, expected batting average (xBA), and strikeout rate.

Furthermore, Happ sports a .517 expected slugging percentage (xSLG) through three plate appearances against Hancock.

Grant Holmes Over 6.5 strikeouts (+105 at DraftKings)

Later in the day, the Miami Marlins host the Atlanta Braves. RHP Grant Holmes takes the mound for Atlanta and presents another strong option in the strikeout market.

This season, Holmes ranks in the 58th percentile in chase rate, 73rd percentile in whiff rate, and 84th percentile in strikeout rate. He's recorded nine or more strikeouts in three of his past four starts, including a 15-strikeout performance in his most recent outing.

That success is likely to continue against Miami. Through 19 combined plate appearances against Holmes, the current Marlins roster owns a fade-worthy 47.4% strikeout rate and a 36.4% whiff rate.
