The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers are deadlocked atop the NL West standings — at least until Saturday night’s outcome at Chavez Ravine provides a new leader.

After a low-scoring series opener, two effective starters take the mound in Dylan Cease and Blake Snell.

See why my Padres vs. Dodgers predictions and MLB picks for Saturday, August 16, fancy the Under.

Padres vs Dodgers prediction

Padres vs Dodgers best bet: Under 8 (-105)

Blake Snell is one of baseball’s best pitchers when he’s on his game. The two-time Cy Young Award winner’s performance can be mercurial, however, so it was unclear what shape he’d be in after four months on the shelf due to left shoulder inflammation.

After going five scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts in his last outing against a Toronto lineup that hits lefties very well, it seems as though the baseball world will be getting “good Snell” until further notice. He’s punched out 18 batters in 10 innings since being activated from the IL.

On the flip side, Dylan Cease has allowed just five hits and two earned runs with 16 strikeouts in his last two starts (11 IP). He’s vastly underperformed his 3.38 xERA, so that 4.52 ERA should continue to drop to close out the regular season.

Both are pitching wizards — Cease ranks 115 in Stuff+, while Snell isn’t far behind at 112, both of which are elite numbers.

The San Diego Padres have a stacked bullpen (league-best 2.99 ERA), and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ arm barn is well rested after an off day on Thursday, followed by six strong Clayton Kershaw innings on Friday.

Padres vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)

Cease has been on a tear, averaging 7.3 strikeouts across his last 10 games. He’s posted 7+ Ks in five of his last six starts, and the opportunity to do so again will be there against a Dodgers lineup with a 24% K rate since the All-Star Break.

Snell has a decreased K prop because the Padres are notoriously difficult to strikeout, but the lefty has been on a different level and just racked up 10 punchouts against a Toronto team that is also hard to strikeout.
