Aaron Judge has gone a little cold of late, failing to record multiple total bases in five of his last seven games. There’s plenty of reason to believe he’ll buck that trend Sunday afternoon in New York.
Judge has been consistent all season long, averaging 2.6 bases per game and clearing at a 60% clip. Quiet spells like this are abnormal and he’s generally quick to get back on track.
He has a great matchup to do just that against Luis Severino and the Athletics. Severino’s play has tailed off over the last month, allowing a .317 batting average, .222 ISO, and striking out fewer than 10% of opposing right-handed batters.
That’s a bad recipe heading into a matchup against Judge. He has dominated against Severino’s pitch mix this season, particularly when playing at Yankee Stadium.
Judge is difficult to slow at the best of times and a struggling Severino is unlikely to do so. Making matters worse is the Athletics have the league’s second-worst bullpen ERA. Even if Severino can keep them afloat and hold Judge in check, the next arms up are unlikely to pick up where Severino leaves off.
