Tipico is sponsoring a pair of college basketball tournaments in a state in which legal sports betting is prohibited on any of the games that are being played.

The global sportsbook operator announced this week that it will be the official sports betting partner of the 2023 MAAC Men and Women’s Basketball Championships, which started Tuesday in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

"Basketball is one of the top sports to bet on, with March Madness seeing 30% more money wagered on it than the Super Bowl across the industry," said Tipico Chief Commerical Officer David Pashkes. "It’s only natural for us to provide these fans with unmatched experiences and create slam-dunk moments as they enjoy their favorite game.”

Not in Jersey

Laws for sports betting in New Jersey allow no collegiate teams in the Garden State or sporting events within the borders to be offered at online betting sites or retail locations.

It might be challenging to do so in a few neighboring states as well. 10 of the 11 schools from the MAAC are from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, where bettors in those states also can’t bet on their home teams. Only Maryland offers sports betting for all the tournament games, which includes state program South Saint Mary's.

Several other states around the U.S. allow March Madness betting, but many of them also have certain restrictions like the one in New Jersey currently has in place.

Tipico is currently licensed in New Jersey, Iowa, Colorado, and Ohio. The sports betting operator is also the exclusive sports betting and iGaming provider for Gannett and supplies odds for the entire USA Today Network.
