Key Takeaways
  • PowerPlay Sportsbook has officially launched its online sportsbook in Alberta.
  • The operator says its platform was built with Canadian players in mind.
  • PowerPlay joins FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Stake, and Betway Canada in Alberta’s expanding regulated iGaming market.

PowerPlay Sportsbook announced Wednesday that its online sportsbook has officially gone live in Alberta, with the aim of tailoring its platform to Albertans and Canadians.

“PowerPlay was built for Canadian players from day one,” said Thomas Vermeulen, marketing director at PowerPlay. “Rather than adapting an existing international product for the Canadian market, we designed our platform around the needs, expectations and preferences of Canadian users.”

The operator enters the newly reshaped Alberta sports betting scene as the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames begin their hotly anticipated seasons and with the CFL postseason just around the corner.

For PowerPlay, it serves as an opportunity to hit the ground running following its entry into Ontario’s iGaming market in 2022.

“Ontario gave us valuable insight into operating successfully within Canada’s regulated gaming environment,” Vermeulen said. “We know Alberta is its own unique market, with passionate sports fans. We are focusing on creating an experience that connects with players throughout Alberta.”

Alberta’s regulated iGaming market launched in July and has seen a groundswell of activity and market growth, including multiple launches in the past several weeks.

“We are excited to officially welcome Alberta players to PowerPlay,” Vermeulen added. “Going live in the market represents an important step in our Canadian growth strategy, and we look forward to becoming part of Alberta’s sports and entertainment community.”

Other operators competing in the market include industry giants such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM, as well as industry disruptors such as Stake and Betway Canada.
