An opportunistic New York bar is looking to make customers very happy ahead of the NBA Finals, with prediction market operator Kalshi lending a hand.

Key Takeaways

  • The Jeffrey is offering customers free tabs if the Knicks win Game 1 of the Finals, using a $5,000 Kalshi position to hedge the financial risk.

  • Kalshi says prediction markets can help small businesses manage risks tied to sports outcomes, weather events, politics, and other real-world factors.

  • The promotion serves as a showcase for how businesses can use prediction markets as a form of operational risk management rather than solely for speculation.

Kalshi announced Monday that Upper East Side bar The Jeffrey will offer customers the deal of a lifetime if the New York Knicks snatch Game 1 from the San Antonio Spurs on the road: the entire bar’s tab on the house.

"We want our customers to feel the magic of this moment," said Andy Freedman, owner of The Jeffrey. "But we're a small business; we can't just eat a full night's revenue on a whim. Kalshi lets us make the boldest possible promise to our customers and know we're covered no matter what."

The promotion is possible thanks in part to a $5,000 hedge on Kalshi, functionally providing insurance should Jalen Brunson and the Knicks nab the series opener. The trade allows The Jeffrey to offset the loss, while allowing the bar to collect “abnormally high revenue” from the promotion.

Pitch to small businesses

Kalshi is using the Knicks promotion as something of a proof of concept, claiming prediction market sites give businesses a level of certainty they previously lacked by hedging operational risk tied to real-world events.

"Small businesses are exposed to real-world risk every single day - weather, politics, sports, economics - with no efficient way to manage it. Traditional insurance is expensive, slow and not built for this kind of operational exposure," said Nicolas Hull, who works on business development at Kalshi.

The platform, which continues to dominate prediction market news, says other small businesses could take advantage, pointing to hotels hedging based on local teams hosting games, clothing stores hedging for foot traffic with weather contracts, or even businesses reliant on imports hedging against U.S. tariff policy through political contracts.

"Kalshi changes the equation: liquid, transparent markets that let any business take an offsetting position on the risks that affect their bottom line,” Hull noted. “This is the beginning of a fundamental shift in how small businesses approach risk."

The Knicks, meanwhile, will be looking to make some history of their own as they appear in their first NBA Finals since 1999.
