The NBA and its players' union are in support of limits on proposition bets.

Key Takeaways

  • The NBA believes “reasonable limitations on certain prop bets” should be considered

  • The NBPA said abuse from disgruntled bettors has become “increasingly alarming"

  • Jontay Porter, Terry Rozier, and Malik Beasley are NBA players involved in a federal probe

ESPN recently reported that concern over game manipulation, like what former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter did, along with harassment from disgruntled bettors, is leading the charge for change.

“Protecting the integrity of our game is paramount, and we believe reasonable limitations on certain prop bets should be given due consideration,” an NBA spokesperson told ESPN. “Any approach should aim to reduce the risk of performance manipulation while ensuring that fans who wish to place prop bets can continue to do so via legal, regulated markets.”

The National Basketball Players Association told the media outlet that there’s been an “increasingly alarming source” of online and in-person harassment toward players.

“If tighter regulations can help minimize that abuse, then we support taking a closer look at them,” the NBPA said to ESPN.

Under investigation

The NBA has endured multiple unusual betting instances from player prop betting over the last couple of years, leading to a federal investigation of Porter, Terry Rozier, and Malik Beasley.

Porter received a lifetime ban in April 2024 for manipulating playing time for a gambling ring to pay off debts, and wagering on league games and his own team. This led to the NBA asking sportsbooks to prohibit under betting markets on players who are on two-way contracts.

Porter pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and is awaiting a December sentence. Five other men have been arrested in relation to the federal probe, with four having already pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy charges.

Rozier has been investigated by federal authorities after a 2023 game he played with the Charlotte Hornets was flagged for suspicious betting activity. He has not been charged.

Beasley, an NBA free agent, has also been looked into for alleged manipulation of player props. He also has not been charged.

Prohibition attempts

The issue of player prop limiting has become a hot topic in recent years and months.

Lawmakers in New Jersey are attempting to prohibit micro-betting, which is live wagering on player props. Bettors try to predict what the next pitch in baseball will be or who will make the next shot in basketball.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has also taken up this crusade after MLB placed two Cleveland Guardians pitchers on leave while the league looks into whether first pitches were manipulated following unusual betting activity.

The NCAA asked legal sports betting states in March 2024 to stop offering player props on college athletes due to player harassment. Maryland, Ohio, Vermont, and Louisiana complied.
