Online and retail sportsbooks set a June handle record in the Bay State, as the NBA Finals and World Cup drove betting activity but limited operator profits.

Two popular events in the NBA Finals and World Cup helped Bay State sports betting operators generate a 15.5% year-over-year handle increase in June.

Key Takeaways

  • Massachusetts surpassed $600 million in wagers for the 10th straight month.

  • The Knicks and U.S. men’s national team kept profits lower in June.

  • Retail sportsbooks reported a higher hold than online operators.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) recently reported a handle of $615.1 million, the most ever wagered in the month of June in the Bay State. Massachusetts sports betting surpassed $600 million for the 10th consecutive month.

However, between the New York Knicks beating the San Antonio Spurs and the U.S. men’s national team winning two of its three group stage games, profits were hard to come by in June. Operators recorded a 9.1% hold, the second single-digit win rate of 2026, resulting in $55.8 million in total gross revenue, a 12% year-over-year decrease.

High retail hold

Online sportsbooks accounted for 98.7% of Massachusetts sports betting revenue in June, reaching $55.1 million. Only two mobile operators produced double-digit holds.

The state’s three retail sportsbooks turned in a better hold of 11.6% on a $6.2-million handle, helped significantly by the 15.1% win rate produced by Plainridge Park Casino.

Operators paid $10.8 million in taxes on $54.3 million in taxable revenue under the state’s 20% tax rate. Massachusetts has filled its coffers with over $85 million year-to-date.

Single-digit holds aplenty

Online Operator June Handle Gross Revenue
DraftKings $302 million $27.4 million
FanDuel $154.6 million   $15 million
Fanatics Sportsbook $65.9 million   $3.9 million
BetMGM $48 million  $4.8 million
Caesars $18.1 million  $2 million
theScore Bet $16.5 million  $1.5 million

DraftKings generated nearly $40 million more in handle in June than during the same month in 2025. The state’s leading online sportsbook won back 9.1% to turn a $27.4-million profit. FanDuel’s hold was just slightly below double digits as the operator made $15 million in gross revenue from a $154.5-million handle.

Fanatics remained third in handle, but the sportsbook won back less than 6% in June. BetMGM fell just shy of a 10% win rate, keeping a little under $4.8 million on a $48-million handle.

Caesars produced a strong month with an 11.2% hold, the highest among the online sportsbooks, on $18.1 million in wagers. theScore Bet finished at around 9.1% on a $16.5-million handle. Bally Bet reported an 11.1% hold, winning back over $419,000 on $3.8 million in bets.

Hot streak

While June wasn’t necessarily a bad month for operators, it might not have been as profitable as they would’ve liked, given the volume that basketball, hockey, and soccer produced.

With fewer major sports in July, the handle could very well dip below $600 million for the first time in nearly a year.

However, revenue is the key figure to keep an eye on. The Boston Red Sox, one of the most popular pro teams in the Bay State, went on a 15-game winning streak from July 3-22.

Their run ended with the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, but there’s little doubt that Bay State bettors took some advantage of the red-hot Red Sox over the last three weeks.
