Ontario sports bettors could soon be wagering with the same company that they use to stream NFL games: DAZN.

A subsidiary of the sports streaming service was officially issued an Ontario sports betting and iGaming registration on Friday, according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario's website.

Key Takeaways
  • DAZN received a key approval from Ontario regulators, which tees the company up to offer online sports betting and iGaming using its DAZN Bet brand.

  • The company also needs to finalize a contract with iGaming Ontario, and a launch date has not yet been announced.

  • DAZN Bet already operates in several European markets, and its Ontario entry would bring the province to 50 regulated iGaming operators.

The registration sets the stage for DAZN’s DAZN Bet to launch in the Ontario iGaming market in the near future, although the exact timing is still to be determined.

Obtaining an iGaming registration is one of two key steps required before going live in Ontario’s regulated market for online gambling; the other is executing a contract with a government agency, iGaming Ontario.

When DAZN Bet does go live, though, it will bring the number of regulated iGaming operators in Ontario to 50, if you include the online gambling business of the government-owned Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.

DAZN was founded in 2016 and has already established itself as a leading sports streaming provider. In Canada, for example, the company has the rights to the NFL, offering football fans a way to watch games, the RedZone channel, and the NFL Network.

More recently, DAZN has been expanding into the world of online sports betting. DAZN Bet has launched in the U.K., Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. Ontario looks like it will be one of the next markets for the brand.

The move into Canada has been in the works for some time as well. A DAZN executive, Daniel Berthold, posted on LinkedIn a month ago that the company was looking for a country manager "to launch, build and own one of the most exciting new markets."

“A true zero-to-one role: shape the marketing strategy, lead the team, drive growth and define how Canadian fans experience DAZN Bet from day one,” Berthold wrote.
