The use of prediction market election data is becoming increasingly valuable. Traditional polling methods continue to rely on phone participation and models linked to historical demographic voting patterns. In the recent past, these methods have come up short in their ability to provide accurate projections.
With money on the line, a significant sample size of willing participants, and constantly updating data, prediction markets could offer another data point for assessing potential election outcomes.
The strength of prediction markets for any event is their ability to pick up shifts in sentiment. This is especially important for election predictions. If a candidate makes a political gaffe, you can see the repercussions in real time. Likewise, when a candidate receives a key endorsement, you can monitor and quantify the benefits.
Kalshi’s current midterm predictions
The upcoming U.S. midterm elections are particularly important as the control of Congress is in the balance. And with roughly 30 days until Election Day, Kalshi is already providing a wealth of data.
Kalshi currently predicts a 63% chance Democrats will control the Senate and a 91% chance Democrats will control the House of Representatives.
One of the key races attracting volume on Kalshi is the race for senator in Texas, pitting Democratic candidate James Talerico against current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The current volume on Kalshi is $16,432,151, with a 62% chance Talerico will turn the senate seat blue.
Meanwhile, the incumbent senator from Maine, Susan Collins, is facing a competitive reelection bid. A recent ProPublica investigation detailed allegations of a pay-to-play arrangement involving Collins and a defense contractor. With a volume of $10,908,286, Kalshi is predicting that her opponent, Troy Jackson, has a 59% chance of upsetting the longtime senator.
CBS News viewers will be able to see a combination of the network’s traditional “Battleground Tracking” data alongside Kalshi’s continuous real-time election contracts.
The partnership adds CBS News to Kalshi’s growing list of news-media partners. It already has partnerships with CNBC, The Associated Press, and Fox News Media.
