Casino and sports betting giant BetMGM has teamed up with payment provider Tappp to release gaming gift cards in Ontario, Canada.

These gift cards will be available for purchase at retailers across the province, while BetMGM will be the first gaming operator with retail distribution of branded gift cards.

Key Takeaways

  • The gift cards can be used to add funds to customers’ accounts
  • BetMGM online casino and online sportsbook are available in Ontario
  • Only seven gaming groups worldwide have a larger market cap than BetMGM

BetMGM has an online casino and sports betting presence in Ontario. Its introduction of gift cards will give it a leg up over its competition as the first gaming operator to have gift cards available for purchase in retail outlets.

“We are constantly seeking new ways to increase the accessibility of our clients' gift card products,” said TAPPP Founder & CEO Sandy Agarwal. “Securing the distribution of BetMGM gift cards in Ontario is another exciting first for us as it opens up an entirely new country for BetMGM and its retail customers.”

The gift cards will work similar to those for other companies. Recipients will log into their BetMGM accounts and enter a unique PIN code found on the back of the gift card, which will result in funds being added to their accounts.

BetMGM’s gift card program launched in collaboration with TAPPP in September 2021 in the U.S. Gift cards, which are redeemed at an industry-high 99 percent in America. The gift cards are available at retailers in 15 different states.

Canadian gift card recipients will not be allowed to add more than $250 to their account weekly.

“Ontario has proved to be a robust market for sports betting and iGaming with BetMGM as one of the top-tier operators,” said BetMGM Chief Revenue Officer Matt Prevost. “We are proud to be the first to debut sportsbook-branded gift cards and offer players another convenient way to fund their accounts.”

Big business

BetMGM is jointly owned by Entain Plc and MGM Resorts International.

According to Companies Market Cap, MGM Resorts is the eighth-largest gambling group in the world and fifth-largest among American companies. Only Las Vegas Sands, DraftKings, Gaming and Leisure Properties, and Wynn Resorts have a higher market cap than MGM’s $10.2 billion.

Despite BetMGM’s enormous growth, an announcement confirming the release of the gift cards in Ontario stated that responsible gaming education is a “key focus” of the company.

It said that its Canadian customers will be allowed to use MGM’s online features through an industry-leading program developed and licensed by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. Customers can also access in-app responsible gaming tools through GameSense integration.

TAPPP is a leader in varied payment options and has opened more than 50,000 retail outlets to its media and sports betting clients.

Meanwhile, BetMGM was founded in 2018, the same year the U.S. federally legalized sports betting. BetMGM Ontario customers must be at least 19 years old to participate in online casino gaming and online sports betting.
