The Preakness Stakes drew a well-matched field of 14, meaning the Preakness Stakes odds are ripe for an upset.

My Preakness Stakes picks and Win, Place & Show predictions for Saturday, May 16 are looking at a pair of double-digit prices to hit the board, led by The Hell We Did.

Preakness Stakes picks: Win, Place, and Show predictions

Best bet: No. 7 The Hell We Did to win

Win prediction: The Hell We Did (+1500 to win at FanDuel)

No. 7 The Hell We Did did the dirty work of keeping Corona de Oro honest in the Lexington Stakes when last seen. He won the battle with him, finishing second while the latter ran third, but lost the war. It wasn't a bad route debut, however.

The Hell We Did was a 13-length winner in a sprint race two-back, and the pedigree (by Kentucky Derby winner Authentic) suggests he'll handle the 1 3/16th-mile distance of the Preakness. Trainer Todd Fincher has also put some sharp five-furlong works into him.

Place prediction: Iron Honor (+450 to win at FanDuel)

If the version of No. 9 Iron Honor that won his first two starts shows up in Maryland on Saturday, the rest of the field is running for second.

He stalked and scored at first asking going six furlongs, then successfully stretched out to a mile in the Gotham Stakes.

Iron Honor was close to a pace that completely fell apart in the Wood Memorial when last seen, but that race came back very slow, sending mixed signals.

For that reason, and because he isn't even proven around two turns, I'm slotting him for second and not first.

Show prediction: Talkin (+2000 to win at FanDuel)

No. 5 Talkin has just one win to his credit through five starts but has kept good company, running second in the Champagne, fifth in the Tampa Bay Derby off the bench, and third in the Blue Grass Stakes last time out.

Aside from his misfire in the Remsen Stakes at age two, Talkin has consistently run speed figures that put him in the discussion for a major share of the Preakness purse.

The fact that Irad Ortiz Jr. sees fit to ride this son of Good Magic is all the more encouraging.
