Canada has won 22 of 27 head-to-head matchups against Czechia, including a multi-goal win in their tournament opener.
After being knocked out of the tournament by Czechia in consecutive years, my Czechia vs. Canada predictions see the red and white returning the favor this time around.
Let’s take a closer look at my World Junior picks for Sunday, January 4.
Canada has looked like the juggernaut they were expected to be. They have scored a tournament-high 32 goals through five games and won three straight games by at least three goals.
That includes a 7-4 victory over Finland, who posted a better goal differential than Czechia in group play and bested USA in the quarters, and a 7-1 stomping over Slovakia in their only elimination game thus far.
Canada has scored at least seven goals in four of five games and shown the ability to keep their foot on the gas late, potting an average of exactly two goals per in third periods.
That should help them gain the needed separation late if they don’t jump out to a massive lead over the first 40 minutes.
There’s also the Jack Ivankovic wild card. He has drastically out-performed Carter George in this tournament (.949 SV% vs. a .844 SV%) and taken over as the starting goaltender.
George conceded five goals against Czechia last time around while posting an underwhelming SV%.
If Ivankovic can continue to give them stable goaltending, it’ll be very difficult for Czechia to hang around given Canada’s big edge in starpower.
Canada has scored at least seven goals in four of five games, including against Czechia. The only time they didn’t was in a matinee against Latvia after playing an emotional opener the night before.
Both Czechia goaltenders have a SV% of .875 or worse so, if Canada continues to pile up the shot volume, they could flirt with going Over the total themselves.
Czechia is not a high-powered team but they have scored multiple goals in all five games and should be able to chip in enough to hit seven.
