Canada have historically dominated Czechia at the World Juniors, winning 21 of 26 head-to-head matchups all-time.
After losing to Czechia in back-to-back quarterfinals, my Czechia vs. Canada predictions see the red and white exacting a little revenge in the tournament opener.
Let’s dive into my World Junior betting picks for Friday, December 26.
Team Canada played stout defense in their pre-tournament games against Sweden and Denmark, conceding three goals in total.
They held the Swedes to just one goal, a very good sign their defense and goaltending can hold up against high-end competition.
It'll likely be difficult for Czechia to muster up consistent offense in this game. They're known more for their structure than their dynamic offensive game, which will make it hard to navigate through Canada’s defense.
When Czechia does get the occasional chance, they’ll have to deal with Carter George in goal, who's a highly touted prospect with valuable experience in his back pocket — whether playing for Canada at previous tournaments or getting his feet wet with a couple of professional games in the AHL.
Offensively, Canada should be able to cause real problems for Czechia.
Led by Gavin McKenna, Tij Iginla, Porter Martone, and the dynamic Zayne Parekh (who has played 12 NHL games), they have a lot of high-end weapons in their lineup. Weapons Czechia can’t match.
Canada really flexed their muscles in the final pre-tournament tuneup, scoring 13 goals on Denmark. They're not the same caliber as Czechia, of course, but it should have Canada’s best players feeling good about themselves heading into this matchup.
Czechia were only able to score one regulation goal against Slovakia in their final tune-up, and that came late. The absence of Adam Jecho, who averaged a point per game in last year’s tournament, will likely be felt against quality competition.
This strikes me as a 4-1-type game in which Canada leads early and capitalizes when forcing Czechia to open up in need of offense.
