The final Signature Event of the PGA TOUR season is here, with a loaded field headed to TPC River Highlands to play the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.
While this star-studded field has World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at the top of the Travelers Championship odds list, my early golf picks are looking further down the board this week.
⛳ Travelers Championship: Key takeaways
- Best early bet: Justin Thomas to win (+2500) – With three consecutive Top 10s at TPC River Highlands the past three years, alongside his current run of six straight Top 25s while gaining true strokes across the board, Thomas has my attention this week
- Best early value: Si Woo Kim (+3300) – There’s been an over adjustment to Kim’s price after he missed the cut at the U.S. Open because his tee-to-green game is a perfect fit for the demands of this track
- TPC River Highlands: A compact, stadium-style 6,844-yard Par 70 layout favoring precision over power that has been redesigned by both Pete Dye (1984) and Bobby Weed (1989)
- Weather: Early forecast calls for warm summer conditions with calm winds and weekend shower threats to keep the course receptive and set for another low-scoring finish in Connecticut
- Expected cut: The Travelers is the final PGA Tour Signature Event of the 2026 season, featuring a limited field of 72 players, who will all play all four rounds through Sunday

Course breakdown: TPC River Highlands
Originally built in 1928, TPC River Highlands underwent a total architectural renaissance under the legendary Pete Dye in 1984, before Bobby Weed added further modern alterations in 1989. Playing as a short 6,844-yard Par 70, River Highlands is the second-shortest course on the PGA Tour schedule.
Because of its length, the track often neutralizes driving distance. The fairways are tightly framed by heavy, mature trees and penal rough, and many players opt to use less than a driver off the tee on multiple holes.
As a result, strong approach play is paramount. Players face a heavy concentration of shots from 175 yards and below, attacking small, subtly contoured Bentgrass green complexes.
If you miss the correct tiers on the putting surface, Dye’s signature steep collection areas and deep sand traps will punish marginal mistakes quickly.
Still, if a player is dialing in their mid-irons, the scoring ceiling here is historic. Jim Furyk famously carded the PGA Tour’s lowest-ever 18-hole score of 58 right here in 2016.
- Short track requiring tee-to-green precision
- Tree-lined fairways and penal rough are primary defenses
- Heavy concentration of shots from 175 yards and in
- Sloping Bentgrass greens punish marginal misses
- Putting circles on the card is a must
Players to watch
- Matt Fitzpatrick: The Englishman isn’t slowing down, and he’s dialed throughout his bag with elite ball-striking and tidy work on and around the greens
- Sam Burns: Putting is Burns’ superpower, so when his approach game spikes like it has the past few months, he puts circles on the card and contends on the weekend
- Ludvig Aberg: A backdoor Top 20 with a Sunday 66 in the U.S. Open was further proof Aberg’s wins are coming, especially with his putter heating up the past three events
Key stats & player profiles to target
- True strokes gained on approach
- True strokes gained tee-to-green
- Birdie-or-better percentage
- Proximity 125-175 yards
- Adjusted scoring average
- True strokes gained around-the-green
Players to watch
- Scottie Scheffler: Despite still chasing his second victory of the season, Scheffler remains a statistical darling, and he won here in 2024 and is up to seven Top 5s in 2026
- Collin Morikawa: The two-time major champion checks a lot of statistical boxes, including ranking second in true strokes gained on approach, fourth in adjusted scoring average, and sixth in birdie-or-better percentage this season
- Si Woo Kim: There’s a lot to like about Kim ranking fourth in true strokes gained tee-to-green, and eighth on approaches to go along with ranking second in birdie-or-better percentage
