The time for the 2024 PGA Championship is upon us, which means Tiger Woods will be teeing it up at another major.
Given his current PGA Championship odds, the four-time PGA Championship winner isn’t likely to contend at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky this weekend. However, he did just enough at The Masters last month, that some of us can’t stay away from making a Tiger wager.
Let’s break down all things Tiger and figure out the best way to add the golf GOAT to your betting card in my PGA Championship predictions.
Tiger Woods current form
Woods did something at The Masters he hadn’t done since the 2023 Genesis Invitational – he played four rounds of competitive golf in one tournament. Woods started strong at Augusta National posting a 73 on Thursday and a 72 on Friday to set the record for most consecutive cuts made at The Masters. However, the weekend wasn’t kind as he shot an 82 and then a 77 to finish 60th.

Tiger’s four PGA Championship victories trail only the great Jack Nicklaus’ record of five times lifting the Wanamaker Trophy. His latest win at the PGA Championship was back in 2007 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma when he successfully defended his trophy from the year prior. Woods also did the PGA Championship double in 1999 and 2000.
Why Tiger Woods will win the 2024 PGA Championship
It’s Tiger Woods. He’s won the Wanamaker Trophy four times. And the one thing he’s got going for him is his experience. Woods has played more rounds at Valhalla Golf Club than most of this field outside of Phil Mickelson.
We also saw Tiger really compete during the first two rounds at Augusta National. He was also solid off the tee there, averaging 300.4 yards per drive with a 67.9% driving accuracy. Staying out of the rough at Valhalla is the key to Tiger’s success. If he has to start whacking the ball out of some awkward lies his body could wear out quicker than he would like.

Why Tiger Woods won’t win the 2024 PGA Championship
His body will wear out quicker than he would like. It was apparent at The Masters that things got harder for Woods the longer the tournament went on (not that playing 25 holes in a day helped much) and his recovery plans are long and complex. And while it's been a month between tournaments, this is the most often Woods has played in years.
Before this tournament, Woods told reporters his health was, “OK” and wished his “game was a bit sharper,” making it sound like the 15-time major winner understands the reality of his situation.
Tiger Woods best bet for the 2024 PGA Championship
The thing we have learned about Tiger Woods post-2021 car wreck is that he is at his best when he is feeling his best. Which more often than not in the early rounds of golf tournaments.
He managed to make the cut at the Masters but playing all 72 holes clearly took a toll on him as he finished last among players who made the cut. Valhalla could pose similar challenges. Despite the elevation changes not being anywhere near as dramatic as Augusta, it’s a long, big course.
So, let’s focus on Tiger’s Round 1 performance when he’s feeling his liveliest. He shot a 1-over 73 in Round 1 at the Masters. That earned him at T35 heading into Round 2 and if not for a bogey on 18 he would have carded an even-par 72 and a T27.
Now, Tiger doesn’t have the same edge at Valhalla that he does at Augusta, but it is still a course he is familiar with. Who knows how the rest of the week will go, especially if there are multiple delays, but Thursday should be the best Tiger we see and a Top 20 finish after Round 1 isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
