The one thing most underestimated was "home continent advantage" Is this not relevant most WC's? Didn't the European teams do much better in Germany and France for example?
Posted this on another thread: no non South American team has ever won a WC in Latin America (SA + Mexico), and no non-European team has ever won a WC in Europe. 15 out of 15 for that trend.
Personally, I think this year will be different, but it's a hard angle to ignore.

Posted this on another thread: no non South American team has ever won a WC in Latin America (SA + Mexico), and no non-European team has ever won a WC in Europe. 15 out of 15 for that trend.

Hedged my Brazil bet with the draw in play. It was only -120 at Bovada with under 13 minutes to play. Was that really a handball by Hulk? Seemed like a close call. This ref is not giving the home team anything.

Great writeups Van. I have little bandwidth for capping Soccer, and save most of my efforts on other sports. But I appreciate the insight you provide. I love watching the games with my kids, and it is always nice to throw a few dinero's on one side or the other for kicks.
Also, my older son's favorite player is Chicharito (long story), so I hope the Mexico run to the finals happens. He would be psyched!

James Rodriguez on Columbia is a rare talent. Can't believe he is only 22. He has the skills of a Ronaldo or Messi and yet plays with the freedom and carefreeness of someone kicking the ball around in his backyard. I'm hoping he continues his magical run against the stingy Uruguayans.

First of all, thanks for your work, vanzack. I read most of your detailed write-ups during group stage and I think your capping is great. The only problem is that this world cup seems to be strange and really hard to figure out. Im watching and playing football my whole life, I have a huge knowledge about football. Im usually quite successful in betting the european leagues. And what happened in this world cup? I almost lost the whole profit i made during the NBA playoffs. This world cup is difficult. It completely surprised me in many many ways. I learned a lot. And theres one rule I will follow the rest of the world cup: Take athleticism, physicality and team spirit over tactics and talent.
I agree with Beginnerboy in everything he said. Mexico has a shot against the Dutch, but seeing them in the finals is too much. Same with Switzerland. They wont eliminate argentina. Its almost a home match for argentina and considering the way the swiss played, I would put not even one euro on them. They looked flat and were lucky to qualify (should have never won the match against ecuador). The biggest surprise of the tournament is the US team for me. They are so disciplined and strong and have a great team spirit. They will give belgium a hard time and I wouldnt be surprised if they eliminate them.
I see France or Germany (whoever wins this match) winning against Brazil in the semi final. If Brazil doesnt make it (and im almost sure they dont), I would take Chile/Colombia over France/Germany. Just because of what i explained earlier. Athleticism over talent. Whoever survives on this side of the table will win the world cup. Argentina and the Dutch will probably play the semis. The dark horses could be mexico and the US. But I dont see either of them winning every match until the final. They would need a lot of luck to eliminate three teams in a row. But for one or two the US and mexico are always good.

If you go back (which I haven't done) I am sure I wagered at least double the units in 2010 than I have this WC. I just have never gotten in to the groove so I have been limiting my wagers.

Your son has great taste. I happen to also be a big fan of Chicharito - and cant understand the guys luck. He is like Wile E Coyote - always being led to believe he will get the prize - but then IMO gets the shaft. He deserves better.
Several years ago I was wandering around Mexico looking for a Chicharito jersey. This was about 2 months before he signed at Manchester United - and surprisingly it was tough to find. I did find one - and it is one of my favorites.
GL to you and your son. We will be rooting the same way tomorrow, and hopefully a few from Chicharito.

My fear is that Colombia looked so good - and Brazil looked so bad - that Colombia will not be getting as much as they should on the line. We will see very soon.....
