5, the trojans with Mitch Mustain as QB last week, as well as a vanilla offensive game calling by head Coach Lane Kiffin, really surpised me by not only getting their asses kicked in Corvallis by Oregon State 2 weeks ago, but also by failing to play aggressively against arguably your biggest rival in history...Notre Dame.
The Trojans are like the Eagles on Defense, when they sit back and REACT, they get their asses handled to them. But when they decide to blitz from all angles, they make plays and cause the opposing offense to make mistakes.
The Bruins are the red headed step children in Los Angeles. Everybosy hate the Trojans because we have consistently dominated this series over the last decade.
So the Bruins often enter our games with a "what do we have to lose" mentality. They traditionally play tough defense, and now they have added an extra flair to their offense which has proven to be USC's achilles' heel....the dive option...a la Vince Young at Texas in 2006 Rose Bowl.
We cant stop ANY team who runs this scheme..Oregon, Washington, Texas, Oregon State, etc...
With that said, Im willing to take the Bruins and a TD, because If Barkley plays (and he most likely will start), he is not 100% after a high ankle sprain, but can put up some points.
This probably wont be an aerial show like some expect (hence the total coming down). UCLA will play us like they played Washingtion, be satisifed trading punts for field positions. It worked for Notre Dame and t could work for us.
Home field isnt an issue. Pasadena is only 15 miles north of Downtown LA (USC's campus). In fact, UCLA has to travel further to the Rose Bowl than SC does. In addition, the contracts are set up to allow MANY more opposing fans inthe stadiums than normal PAC 10 games. There are just as many USC fans tailgating outside the Rose Bowl as there are UCLA fans.
Keys to a Trojan victory:
1) Barkley needs to be mobile and successful early
2) USC Offense needs to get the running game going early to open up the passing game
3) Monte Kiffin needs to blitz blitz blitz
4) Put pressure on UCLA QB and make him rush his decisions
5) Dont turn the ball over
6) Throw the deep ball (which they didnt do against ND)
7) Score on Defense and Special Teams.
