Did he basically call a press conference this morning to bag the Aussie selectors?

I thought he called it to announce his retirement

Decision to cut Katich would have made sense if both Hussey and Ponting were axed as well

I can see why he is frustrated when he has outperformed both of them in the past 2 years

Definitely hard done by but I can see what the selectors are thinking - they clearly want to give whoever they have in mind as longterm opening batting possibles a decent amount of time to get comfortable before the next Ashes series.

Hey, if (and at this stage it's a pretty big if) someone steps up and grabs that position over the next two years the selectors' decision will look pretty shrewd.

It's really a case of damned if you do and damned if you dont - look back a year or so ago when the knives were out for Australia's selectors for NOT being diligent in planning for the future during our golden era. Now that they are, they're getting smashed from pillar to post

    I have to disagree.

Marsh (struggles), Watson (carries the side and can't deal with it) and Hughes (took England one game to figure him out) are the future?

The squad is rubbish. They rank Australian players, where Test players get a higher weighting due to fewer games, and so on.

Katich's Test record, weighting and all, is not in the top 25 Australian players, or Hilditch and his other cronies decided that they would make an exception for him?

White, Smith, Siddle, Marsh, Johnson, Hughes, Hilfenhaus, Hauritz, Hastings, Doherty, Bollinger.... all should be cut before Katich.

Hilditch is a fucking idiot. Let's pick some more young quicks who can't swing the ball let alone move it off the pitch.

Australia are fucking doomed for years as long as this clown is in charge.

I hear ya, and to be overlooked for flat-out under performers like Marsh and Hughes must be gut wrenching for Katich. Imo he's a bit of a victim of his batting position - you look at the middle order oldies (Ponting and Hussey) they've stuck with and if Katich was in the same boat he'd probably have been retained. I just think the selectors are really looking at that opening position as a bit of a long term project and if, in all likelihood Katich won't be there in 2013, they need to explore some options now and have a combination bedded down by the time the ashes rolls around.

Its probably going to mean some short term pain over the next series or three but I can see some wisdom in their madness.

must say I'm a bit curious about the appointment of Craig McDermott as bowling coach. Apart from failed business dealings and a sex tape extortion drama I have no idea what he's done since retirement, let alone to qualify for a position as important as this ?

well justin langer has gone from batting coach to national assistant coach, and our batsmen are the worst players of swing of all top nations, so why are we surprised?

I wonder if the current selectors were in charge back in 1991, whether Warne would have had a career that he did

Brett Lee got a contract. WTF???

If age is a factor then why did a 33yo who has played ZERO tests gets a contract,

Katich should not only have a contract, he should be opening the batting and have the c next to his name

And why the need for 4 spin bowlers?

4 spinners so that the selectors can keep using trial and error when picking the team

Ponting will probably retire after the summer
