Andy and I have collaborated on the picks this week.  Neither he nor I was in any shape to post long threads due to our friend Johnnie Black. So I’ll post my picks. Our thoughts and reasoning are on his podcast.
We will be at the Open Thursday Friday and Saturday.
Going with guys who have shown the ability to play well on links style courses. Also guys who can hit it Long will be an edge. Also going with guys who play well on pop annua greens (mostly found in California and Hawaii).  So I’m looking for guys who do well early in the year when the tour is out west on these type greens or guys who grew up out there.
If memory serves me Phil, Walker, Howell, Fowler are just some

    Phil -110 v DeChambeau
Phil has good history here as everyone knows. He was 2nd in 2004 when the fairways were only 26 yards wide. Now 41 yards. His driving is his Achilles heel so wider fairways will help. Great approach shots, great around the greens, 2nd on tour in strokes gained putting behind Day.  Very good links player. Adds up to a Phil win

    Grace -115 v DeChambeau
Grace is an excellent links player. Has some top finishes at the US Open
    2017 T6
    2016 T5
    2015 T4
In good form, but so is DeChambeau. Just not sure what DeChambeau will bring to a links course. If he is good, I may be in trouble with 2 bets

    Howell -135 v Chappell
Howell has shown he plays well on these greens as he is always good early season. He is solid. Chappell has been lousy lately and his stats for putting (#153) and strokes gained around the greens (#97) are not great.  But he is good off the tee.
I also tried Beef Johnson +110 v Chappell small play

    Fleetwood -150 Garcia
Too high to bet much but Sergio has been lousy lately since having his kid and Fleetwood is a good links player.

    Woodland -110v Henley
    Woodland trending up lately.
His length will be an advantage (#3 on tour strokes gained driving and #5 in distance) and he hits a lot of greens (#5 on tour)

    Walker -125 v Stanley
Walker back in form after recovering from Lyme Disease.
    Ryder Cup talent

I played Sergio Garcia to make the cut? NO +200 (50/150) @ Westgate, sacker for the reasons you mentioned. CUT 4 of his last 5 tourneys ???

    RD3
    Fisher -115 v Li
Women up early this morning at 6:39 am and made a few bets
    Fisher the biggest
Fisher on Twitter after rd1 said that his rd1 score of +6 didn’t reflect how well he played. He said he hoped his rd2 score would.  So I played him yesterday against Hadwin and won easily. Fisher played in the morning during the worst of the weather and shot +1.
He is an Englishman used to playing links golf.
    Like him here.

    Also played smaller on
Louie -110 v Cantlay. Louie always good at majors   Playing solid so far.
G@y 120 v Burns. Burns qualified to get in. Think happy who is in good form may have an edge. Saw him for a few holes and he looked comfortable. He was good last week

2-1 RD3 but bet most on the loser. So it goes.

USGA should be ashamed of themselves. The guys who played the best rounds 1&2 are now behind guys who almost MC and got out early RD3
    Greens ridiculous.

I disagree...all these players are good enough to play par golf in conditions like these...its their own mental mistakes playing for birdies and ultimately making errors resulting in bogeys and double bogeys...you better believe back in their prime, both Tiger and Phil would be in the final pairing headed into Sunday with scores hovering around even par or -1 after 54 holes...the tour now is full of physically great athletes, but mentally soft golfers...i am really disappointed in the direction of where the state of golf is headed...to me, theres really no appeal to follow or watch it...i wanted to wager on it, but ultimately passed.

The only way golf can remain relevant moving forward is if somehow the PGA rebrands itself as a "betting friendly" sport and really partners up with sportsbooks to make it more sexy to bet on golf every weekend...highly doubt this will ever happen though...a round takes too long and millenials are not going to follow a 5hr wager.

so you hardly EVER post in the Golf Forum packersbackers and you see fit to criticize the assessment of sacker17 one of the BEST golf handicappers on Covers, who is AT the tourney along with alangrrbs ??? guess you did NOT see the Shinnecock superintendent APOLOGIZE on the Fox broadcast for the condition of the course ???

this has turned into a typical USGA "SH!T SHOW" this week just like Oakmont two years ago and Chambers Bay in 2015

Totally agree with your round 3 assessment Sacker. Guys in the morning are going for the lowest rounds of the tournament, yet in the afternoon the best in the world are struggling to hit a green in regulation. Those greens were just stupid today. That said, What Phil did today was incredibly wrong and I think he should be DQ'ed.

Leaning hard to fade Chappel and play DeMorat +165... Hard to not fade Phil after yesterday's antics but I have zero faith in Rickie caring to finish strongly that far back...

@Covers I think you guys have made it incredibly difficult to navigate and reply on this website... I hope you guys fix it to make it more user friendly.

Thanks for having my back. Packers has a right to disagree but he must not be watching closely. Good shots went unrewarded, even penalized, and turned into bogeys. It was a fiasco. It was really bad for the last groups out there.

I agree, Phil should be DQ. He lost his mind because he was playing lousy and while forcing it trying to make birdies, got overly aggressive, and then totally frustrated. I’m pretty sure he is embarrassed and would love a mulligan. Did u see the interview with “Beef” after RD3?  Pretty funny.

Forecast rd4 is for much lower winds. Almost calm in am (3-5 mph) and afternoon only 7 mph winds.
I think that’ll help but maybe they should water the greens after each group comes through.

    Happy Fathers Day guys.

With two 66s and a 68 posted, there were plenty of opportunities for players to shoot par or better...i could see that from the moon...i dont need to post in any forum year round to offer my opinions...i used to be an avid recreational summer golfer with a 2 handicap and tried several times to qualify for the canadian open in my early 20s (once missing it by 2 strokes) before university and life got in the way....i know golf enough to know these guys on tour are simply nowhere near as mentally tough as players from Tiger and Phil's peak years at the height of golfs popularity in the early 2000s...so what if the course is hard, go out there and shoot pars.

And some will say this week was all set up by the usga itself to create headlines and get people talking about golf again within mainstream sports media...bad publicity is still good publicity.

I’m ok with you disagreeing respectfully which U did.
And I might add you must know your golf having been a 2 handicap.
But the low scores were in the morning only.
3 guys under par and all in the morning wave.
The afternoon wave average score was 3.5 strokes higher (77 v 73.5). And the last few groups had it the worst as things grew progressively worse.
As far as mental toughness goes, the iceman, Stenson is as mentally tough as anyone, and he was saying afterwards that the greens got away from them.
