The 5 Best-Run States in America...and they all have something in common ,besides an abundants of natural resources ..See if you can guess what that is ?
#5 Iowa...#4 Utah...# 3 Nebraska ...#2 Wyoming and coming in at #1 North Dakota ...
24/7 Wall St. considered data from a number of sources, including Standard & Poor's, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Tax Foundation, RealtyTrac, The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Conference of State Legislators.
Unemployment data was taken from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Credit ratings were from ratings agencies S&P and Moody's. We relied on the FBI's Uniform Crime Report for violent crime rate by state and large metropolitan areas. RealtyTrac provided foreclosure rates.
A significant amount of the data we used came from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. Data from ACS included percentage of residents below the poverty line, high school completion for those 25 and older, median household income, percentage of the population without health insurance and the change in median home values from 2006 to 2011. These are the values we used in our ranking.
If you guessed, that they all have Republican Governors..you would be correct ..

percentage of
residents below the poverty line, high school completion for those 25
and older, median household income, percentage of the population without
health insurance and the change in median home values from 2006 to
2011.
This game is rigged with flyover States comprised of small cities which skew any pertinent and meaningful data.

The current success of these state governments is due to the larger economic climate of the country. Also, global warming has led to some abnormally mild winters. State and local governments are saving millions in Iowa from this. I suppose the governor is responsible for this too.

The North Dakota's sucess is due to the state Government’s hands-off approach to the development of its Bakken shale formation by private interests...(limited government)..
It is the responsibility of each state to deal with the resources that they have ..Nth.Dakota is business friendly vs.California who's regulatory framework is un-friendly to business's ...taxing and regulating its economy more than most other states...
California is 24/7 Wall St.'s "Worst Run State" the state also has one of the highest tax burdens on income. According to the Tax Foundation, the state also has the third-worst business tax climate in the country....with unemployment at 11.7% and a budget deficit at 20.7%..
North Dakota's budget deficit is.. O .. as in none...

Californians might not be rushing to North Dakota .but they are rushing out of California ..due to high taxes, overly regulated and no jobs ...
They are fleeing to Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, and Georgia because those states have a better economic climate with less taxes and regulation...

An estimated 25 billion barrels of oil are sitting untapped in the vast Monterey and Bakersfield shale deposits..California's outmigration is 125,000 more than it's inmigration..the productive people are leaving and the state ..no more "California Dreamin'"...
Staying are a growing permanent welfare class....As it stands today, about 40% of Californians don't pay any income tax ..
California is proving, natural resources do not guarantee prosperity...

What source do you quote for your assertion?
If those States are seeing any immigration, it is from Mexico.

Perhaps, better to say "best 5 states to live in" instead of 'best run states.' Private sector has bigger impact than government for some of the data used. Governments influence education and crime rate. But income, unemployment, foreclosures and property values are affected mostly by private sector. Governments receive excess credit or blame which they don't deserve.

I would guess all 5 are in the bottom 20 in population and mostly have the largest land area/population ratio.
Do I win?

Well a similar inaccurate comment would be that Australia and Canada are superior to the USA because their currency is strong due to the SAME rationale that this lame article is.
Why not add Texas to the list, they are doing an awesome job as well.
