I believe that regardless of partisan affiliation even GOPs are tired of his lack of transparency and being afraid to let people know the truth...
I think it was a governor in the south that basically said that if has done nothing wrong then he should have nothing to hide...
My biggest issues personally with romney is that I dont trust him and have no idea what he stands for other then making something up in the moment regardless of it is true or consistent with he said before or will say in the future...
This whole refusing to cough up the truth thing really is not helping him...

Both democrat and republican politicians that we have in office now are disgusting human beings, who cheat and pad their pockets and create laws to help rich guys skirt tax laws.
until all the lobbyists and all the money is out of govt completely, along with term limits, our govt {or i should say the people in it}will stay corrupt

i really don't care about this issue much. if romney paid a 5% tax rate, there's only so much anyone can say as long as it's legal. besides, everyone hates taxes and we'd all do whatever the law allows to reduce our tax rate. why is it so much worse when a rich guy does it?
anyway, that being said, this guy couldn't be handling this much worse.

romney is a perfect example of the worst kind of politician
why would you say this? I dont disagree with you... just want to know your thinking...
With that said I agree with you about the liberally based media not bringing attention to the stories you brought up or f&f....
This is like foxnews during the GW bush years... and the fact that people actually follow and mindlessly believe what the news is telling them to believe is the scary part...

he is no public servant, he has no backbone on any of the issues, he will tell you whatever you want to hear so you will vote for him
i dont think he is a bad man for his success, its nice to make lots of money in a corrupt system of benefits for the rich and powerful
but he does not give two shits about changing any of the crony capitalism mechanisms which have enabled him and his family to accumulate the amount of greenbacks he has stashed away

Politician serving themselves ... as cd puts it ... is dead accurate. Maybe setting some term limits instead of having 30 year career politicians will do the trick. If there's one tax return I wanna see, it's Romneys. Disclose damnit
Why wouldnt he disclose unless he has something to hide... or perhaps what is there to see is far worse then what people are speculating...
I think if people see what they think they are supposed to they will simply move on eventually figuring it was what they it was... romney will recover from it...
But perhaps what would be exposed is so far beyond what people expect that the shock value alone would throw him in to a tailspin that the months left are not enough time to recover from...
Im guessing it is the later based on his choice in continuing to refuse to honest

<<<<Lefties all up in arms about obama's "transparency"
yet looking for a minute by minute update on Romney's bathroom visits. This election is about the economy and obama's failure.
The fool who's spent $2M covering up his past has the hubris to expect anything from anyone. >>>>
What's even funnier are all of your posts about Obama's birth certificate, Larry Sinclair, etc.... and now suggesting that Romney's private life is irrelevant.

Very interesting information released by the IRS regarding the top 400 taxpayers in the USA from 2009. Tax-loss carry forwards may have been maximally employed by many of the wealthy who derive income mainly from dividends and capital gains:
-6 returns paid 0% federal income tax in 2009(which is unfathomable to me).
-27 paid between 0-10%
-89 paid between 10-15%
-none of the 400 paid more than 35%
So, 33% of the top 400 paid 15% or less in taxes. Incredible.
The top 400 earned 81 billion in 2009 but(legally) payed an effective tax rate of 19.9%. I don't think many of us(majority of us being in the middle class, I would surmise) can say that we have paid less than 20% of our income in taxes during any given year. In fact, the average middle class working person pays a 14.2% payroll tax, plus an income tax, to have federal tax payments in the 25% to 30% range.
Paul Ryan has proposed eliminating all taxes on capital gains, dividends and carried interest. This is pure fiscal abomination. Romney paid a very low 13.6% in taxes on his 21.7 million dollar income in 2010. Under Ryan's plan Romney's effective tax rate would be an infinitesimal 0.82%.
Capital gains and dividend taxation need to be maintained(and likely increased, but this is debatable). Loopholes need to closed, as they benefit only a few. The tax rates for earned and unearned income needs to debated. It is important to debate why Romney and Ryan advocate decreasing the tax rates for the wealthy and corporations(when the effective rates are so low as it stands) and effectively increasing taxes on the majority of the middle class.
This is also why many are asking, justifiably so, to see Romney's tax returns and view any loopholes and foreign entities from which he may have benefited. Most of us are not privy to these avenues of tax avoidance. Though I doubt anything blatantly illegal was done on his part, he is running for the Presidency and should offer the voters complete transparency in regards to his own tax compliance and the effective rates he himself has paid through the years.
It looks extremely shady otherwise and will cost him votes.

Romney already showed several years of his tax returns but if the dems want to play games like this then let's take a real good look into obama's past records that hasn't really been revealed to the public....there are some shady things that needs to be exposed.
But all this is really a distraction that the dems have come up with because they certainly can't talk about the real issues that plagued this country...
like the high rate of unemployment where tens of millions are still out of work, the huge 16 trillion dollar deficit, the adding of 4 billion dollars daily to this deficit.
Obama and his stooges can't really have a dialogue about the real issues that plagued this country...because they have failed miserably to fix it in the close to 4 years they have had to try to fix it.
Romney and Ryan in 012!

We all know the NYT leans democratic and liberal and are no fans of Romney, but this is a tremendously researched, fact-driven article.
Did Romney profit egregiously from his Bain investments in HCA? HCA basically bilked the Medicare system to increase their profits to please their private equity masters.
Another possible cause for Romney withholding his tax returns?

Mellow-wolf, good write up (post #38). With Romney's new VP proposing 0% tax rate on investments (I'm assuming long-term capital gains), the top 400 you mentioned will pay next to nothing in taxes. Amazing ...

Anyone who seriously reads Ryan's tax proposals will be astounded by his lack of specifics.
His tax rate cut proposals(along with maintaining and extending all of Bush's tax cuts), overwhelmingly benefitting the 1%, would remove 10 trillion dollars of revenue from the budget over the next 10 years, according to the non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
However, he does not mention anything about where he would make up those cuts other than saying he would be "cutting certain tax breaks for the wealthy". Which ones? I would like to know.
He has stated that he plans on completely eliminating taxes on capital gains, dividends or carried interest. So those are off the table apparently.
So what's left to remove? Does he remove charitable deductions? Mortgage interest deductions? Medical expense deductions? State and local tax deductions? Which corporate loopholes is he planning to close?
So where does he ultimately make up this lost revenue? Specifics are severely missing from both Romney and Ryan. When will they provide some details? I am not holding my breath.

Hope some of you gentlemen will take the well spent 10-15 minutes to read this article.
Our financial sector is, indeed, cannibalizing our productive sector, resulting in overall decline. The opacity surrounding Romney's taxes is bewildering, to say the least.

A couple of other good articles dissecting Bain, Romney's tax returns from 2010 and 2011 and his 100 million dollar IRA. A glimpse into a tax world I will likely never inhabit or from which I will have the ability to gain benefit.
