Republicans call for a ban on all abortions, some rapes.

here's one reason why i could never side with the hypocritical religious crazy republican party until it excises the religious crazy part and does a complete 180 to become the party of small government, fiscal conservatives- a concept so far removed from today's republican party that it'll take years to get there, if ever.

notwithstanding my largely libertarian view on keeping government out of personal decisions, i have two daughters.  and knowing how kids are when they are young, and not so young, i know that getting pregnant can happen to anyone.  condoms break, birth control isn't 100%, girls don't always remember to take it, kids get drunk and do stupid shit, and that doesn't even cover date rape and stranger on stranger rapes, the legitimate and the republican kind.

so, if one of my kids gets pregnant, i want them and hopefully my wife and i to make the decision about how to handle it. 

what i really don't want is some religious wacko controlled government telling me and my kid what needs to happen at that point.  i wouldn't want them to tell me under any circumstances but the worst circumstance is the reality that the government people who want to dictate that decision are hypocritical, religious nuts who could not give a fuck about my daughter or the fetus and just use the abortion issue to excite the ignorant masses so they can keep their jobs and pay back the special interests who have bought them. 

so, as long as the abortion control issue is a direct line between opportunistic politicians and their special interest masters, i'd prefer we keep that decision in-house and i'll never side with a religious nut republican. 

It gets even more problematic.

It hasn't been very well explained by the media, but the term 'legitimate' rape did not come from thin air. When the 'fetus rights' language was discussed by the House Republicans, there was some question on the exception issue of rape and incest. Many of the more moderate and mainstream Republicans supported the exception, but the issue was raised as to what constitutes legitimate rape or incest. In other words, would women make the claim of rape or incest solely to obtain an abortion (thus an 'illegitimate' rape, certainly a crude and abrasive oxymoron).

The problem here (among the obvious) is that there are very few rape convictions compared to rape occurences (as you know, many are plea bargained to sexual assault, or unlawful contact) so how, in fact, could a woman prove rape without a legal conviction?

I remember a comedian once stating that the easiest way to win over a white politican on the issue of abortion in the case of rape is for his daughter to be raped and impregnated by a black male. I abhor such comments on society but this is such an assine issue and the fact that so many people ignore it really makes me wonder....

yeah, once the smoke clears, there is some irony with all the republicans calling for akin to drop out.  of course, we all understand that they are calling for him to drop out not because of what he says and believes but because they want to win that seat, regardless of how, and now that is less likely with akin. 

but the whole idea of legitimate rape and no abortions under any circumstances and then the irrational religious minded nonsense to justify that position by saying a woman's reproductive system may shut down after a rape, or whatever, are not new concepts on the republican side.   

there is a law against it, but in practice, it's not really illegal where i was a prosecutor. 

Yep. Rape is very tough to prove. Between needing to be alleged right way, often not having any physical evidence, and in cases where alcohol was a factor (not to mention that the majority of situations involve the question of consent), rape is generally a defense attorneys dream for plea negotiations.

It is interesting to observe how people assume abortion is a political loser for Republicans.

The language is similar to that adopted by the GOP in 2000, 2004, and 2008.

i'm not necessarily saying the abortion issue is a loser for republicans.  i am obviously pro choice but i can appreciate opposing views.  but when someone says they are anti abortion, what does that mean?  against abortions after a certain period of time, against abortions in certain situations.  it
's not necessarily a black and white issue.  however, i do think the extreme position of being against all abortions regardless of rape or health of the mother is a political loser, just as most extreme positions are.   

hutch, you have to justify it somehow.  of course, those same people, when they talk about the sanctity of marriage, may not want to discuss what heterosexuals have done to the sacred institution of marriage (f you can say those words without laughing), when you consider the divorce rate, the adultery rate, the failure to pay child support rate, the domestic violence rate, and so on.  some might so those things are a detriment to the sanctity of marriage but you don't see people lining up at chick-fil-a over those issues for some reason.  hard to keep divorce and wife beating in the closet.

crusher, i have to be honest when i tell you i don't know what the fuck you are talking about.  however, if i can decipher an opinion in there somewhere that a parent is a failure if his/her kid gets pregnant as if the parents can control everything a kid does all of the time and kids of "responsible parents" never do anything stupid, then the less i understand of the rest of your post, the better. 

Wow. I guess the difference between posts one and fourteen is one poster is acknowledging what we all know...that parents of either political affiliation will have children who make mistakes despite good parenting.

Did every child who died for driving recklessly or after drinking have a failure for a parent? Does every child who harms another child have a failure for a parent? Does every child who fails a class or a grade have a failure of a parent? Does every child who gets in any form of legal trouble have a failure for a parent? Does every child who has sex that results in pregnancy have a failure for a parent? Does every child who commits suicide have a failure for a parent?

For the poster in post fourteen...there are documented cases of children who carried a pregnancy to term due to their parents political/religious beliefs only to suffer severe depression and/or physical harm that resulted in suicide. Were those parents failures? Perhaps if you were faced with the prospect of your daughters rape and pregnancy, you would view this from a different lense.

There is an old saying that is applicable here....self-righteousness does not encompass that which is merely right. Think about it.

crusher, i'm giving my opinion but also antagonizing the big government right also because i don't want them in my business.  you should know that politicians couldn't give two shits about me, my kids and their kids.  so why is the abortion issue such a hot topic for politicians?  because it excites people and helps people et elected so they can keep the gravy train going at the expense of the rest of us.  on that context, i don't need them making personal decisions for us.

At least I can respect others for their personal choices AND the correlating RESPONSIBILITIES Rape is an ugly thing but YOU must EVERY PARENT needs to educate their daughters to be AWARE of ALL your surroundings at ALL times.
