Governments are better than the private sector in undertaking projects that are too expensive and unprofitable. For examples, hydroelectric dams in States. At the federal level, national defense such as war against enemy nation. For municipal government, infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges. For good reasons, these projects are handled by governments in most countries of the world.
of all the hydro dams in the US, can you name one that loses money, even when run by the govt? you realize there almost 0 operating costs for the dams, obviously building it takes a lot, but they last for 50-100 years.

i'll say it again, if they didnt stick their noses in the housing market by pressuring fannie and freddie to make more loans to lower income households or individuals we wouldnt be in the mess we are in.
Senator Dodd said it best a few months back (paraphrasing)
"If we make ppl put up 5% then only those who can afford a house would be able to buy one"
