If McCain truly wanted to to pull a rabbit outa the hat, instead of trying to smear Obama which people are sick of & is likely to backfire, he should be trying to come up with an economic plan or some measures that could appeal to voters across a broad spectrum at this time. Didn't he say they were gonna stick to the issues in his campaign? Maybe even something like the progressive Fair Tax which has some inherent appeal to dems, repubs & indy's alike and is (or at least was) supported by Ron Paul & Huckabee.

The plan is to go to Washington and be mavericks, to reform, to bring change....."Change is Comin'".....
I have heard one concrete piece of McCain's "change".....The $5000 tax credit for healthcare benefits.... that goes directly to the healthcare firms....and the tax that employers will pay for the health benefits that they try and provide for their employees.
I have not, to this point, heard anything else concerning the change that is coming to Washington...and, especially, concerning economics..
...which, if you will remember the primaries...John McCain said that he was not too well versed with economics......

Largest Private Land Deal in Arizona (McCain had a helping hand) - Link
Military Contract that McCain decided to become a part of because of his lobbyist friends (moved potential jobs out of the US and gave a European country the military job) - Link
Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, was being paid $15-30k a month from Freddie/Fannie for doing "nothing". Headed the Homeownership Alliance, which lobbied for deregulation and also started the lending of sub prime mortgages to families who could not afford them. The Homeownership Alliance was a front of Freddie/Fannie and disappeared once all the problems with mortgages started - Link
Each candidate has their skeletons but IMO McCain is a riskier choice than Obama.
KOAJ - If the top 10% holds 90% of the wealth then aren't they obligated to pay 90% of the taxes instead of 60-70%??

Mr OPC - yep, that's the only change I've heard as well & I don't see how he divorces himself from the failed Bush policies, regardless of why they've failed. Also don't see how he lowers taxes for everyone & businesses with this bailout pkg while staying indefinitely in Iraq. I understand the concerns on Obama's tax hikes, but the middle class needs a tax break like never before & the only one's whose taxes are raised are much more likely to better be able to deal with it. Not just from having a higher income/ living standpoint, but thru tax breaks & small bidnesses running more income thru as personal & in tax shelters/havens as well. Things that aren't even relevant for folks just getting by paycheck to paycheck.

But your VP candidate can be made "free of witches" and have God annoint her campaign for Governor and help raise money for her......reality check here.....
...and she is the one out there dealing with Rev Wright...Didn't I hear McCain call this off-limits a while ago?....
Maybe the Alzheimers is setting in sooner than I thought...and he forgot saying that....
He wants to "turn the page on the economics issue" and deal with something much more important....Rev Wright....
You respect that approach, KOAJ?
Do you want to teach your children that this is the way someone should be elected to the highest public office in the free world?

The Statement: The campaign for Democratic presidential nominee
Sen. Barack Obama on Monday, Oct. 6, unveiled a Web site noting that
Republican opponent Sen. John McCain played a key role in the Senate's
"Keating Five" scandal of the 1980s. "McCain intervened on behalf of
Charles Keating with federal regulators tasked with preventing banking
fraud, and championed legislation to delay regulation of the savings
and loan industry — actions that allowed Keating to continue his fraud
at an incredible cost to taxpayers," the site says.
Get the facts!
The Facts:
Keating was sentenced to prison and required to pay more than $1
billion in civil penalties after being convicted on fraud, racketeering
and conspiracy charges centered around his running of Lincoln Savings
and Loan, which he bought in 1984. On April 14, 1989, Lincoln was
seized by the government at an eventual taxpayer cost of $3.4 billion,
then the most expensive thrift bailout in history. Lincoln and Keating
became national symbols of the savings-and-loans collapse of the '80s —
much as lending firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have symbolized the
current financial meltdown.
McCain had been friends with Keating
since the early '80s — their families vacationed together several
times, according to previous CNN reporting. Keating was an early
financial supporter of McCain's political career and donated to his
campaigns repeatedly over the years. Keating's first company, American
Continental, was headquartered in Arizona, the state McCain represents.
McCain became one of the so-called "Keating Five" — five U.S. senators
investigated over accusations they tried to interfere in a federal
investigation of Keating's role in the savings-and-loan's collapse.
<...>
McCain
also wrote several letters to government regulators and other officials
regarding the issue. One, dated Jan. 30, 1985, to White House chief of
staff James Baker, called the proposed regulations "unwise," saying the
effort "flys (sic) in the face of our recent efforts to remove the hand
of government from the affairs of private enterprise."
On April
9, 1987, McCain and the other senators attended a meeting with federal
regulators investigating Keating. McCain has since said he regrets
doing so. "He asked me to help him," he said during an October 2002
interview with Chicago's WGN-AM radio station. "I said I wouldn't do
certain things. He called me a wimp. I threw him out of my office, but
I still went to a meeting with four other senators with a group of
regulators."
<...>
The Verdict: True. McCain
did push to delay regulations that would have cracked down on
savings-and-loans practices and intervened on Keating's behalf,
although he was cleared of wrongdoing in the "Keating Five" case.

jpero - no i dont b/c the top 10% will find ways to shelter their money or just leave
hutch - i dont, but mccain has no answers...neither does obama but he isnt of the party of bush. however if mccain can connect obama's pickets lined to fnm/fre and prove that collapsed the mkt (im reaching i know) maybe that helps
mccain needs something out of his control to win at this point

The deregulation issue, which is at the heart of the Keating issue, is..and will be for years...much more important..
Unfortunately, it gets lost in the small government/big government haze that all debates move toward....
You want smaller government for healthcare, education...you want more states' rights....OK, fine....
BUT.....as we are seeing around the world today...this is not a domestic issue, this is global...even trading in Russia and Brazil was suspended today.....
We need CONTROLS......and that can only come from one place...WASHINGTON, DC.
Maybe in 10, 20 years we can relax/change some controls...but we do need them now.
