Thanks Bowl, I didn't think anyone could make me laugh that much today.

So do you think Mr. Shields will be writing the tax check with a smile on his face or not?

Will he feel like he is being financially sodomized or not?

Will he be thanking his lucky stars that he gets to live close to family?

Actually, you said that 45% was "fair". Personally I think that's way too high.

You also said in another thread, I believe, that you took issue with the federal tax rate. So why not make this thread anytime an athlete signs a deal? What makes James Shields so special?

Also, what is the difference that makes 45% "fair" and 50% "being financially sodomized"? Any chance you can explain that difference?

I am way to smart of an individual. I felt that this thread could use an intellectual boost and thus why I jumped in.

And you know better than to call me a liberal. A more bold faced lie has never been told. We both know that I am as non-partisan as it gets.

James Shields is a multi-millionaire, who gets paid to play a game most of us played as kids for free, has a wife and two daughters, now lives in Southern California where he is from, earned an AL Championship ring, was one game away from a WS title, and is set for life if he plays his cards right.

I imagine if that doesn't put a smile on his face daily, then nothing will. Doesn't matter if he is paying taxes, or doing something else he doesn't necessarily want to do. I'm sure he wakes up daily and wants to trade places with no one else.

If he really cared that much about his feelings when paying taxes, I'm sure he would have had his agent pursue offers from teams in Texas, Florida, or wherever else state taxes are less.

I say this even though your argument was about federal taxes, in which case, this entire thread becomes irrelevant anyways since it applies to all athletes, regardless of where they sign.

You're pretty much all over the map with your arguments today Bowl. Your game isn't as sharp as it usually is. Maybe you should lay off and enjoy the three day weekend.

No, I think I was pretty adamant that 45% was my limit.

I disagree. Seems to be a lot of republicans or non-partisan independents like myself

Non-partisan independents ....The minority of independents who are completely unattached to a party are the least politically informed segment of the electorate.

Non-leaning independents are less likely to be registered voters. Those non-leaning independents that are registered show up at the polls less often than either partisan identifiers or leaners.

They are also less likely to have opinions on issues than others segments of the population. It is probably not too much to say that most unaffiliated independents are nonpartisan simply because they are too uninformed or disinterested in politics to chose between the two parties.

If we're talking state taxes and federal taxes the system doesn't make sense to me.

Lets say for the sake of argument that WA state has a state income tax. Under the new schedule format the Padres will play 2-4 games in WA vs the Mariners. Since he is a SP on the rotation he likely will pitch in no more than one of those games. Yet he would pay state taxes as if he played in all games like he was a starting position player.

Because he makes so much money he will likely pay more in WA state taxes than 20 people that live there year round and use state resources and infrastructure year round.

Thank you in advance for acknowledging that I bring up some excellent points.

I have yet to hear a pro athlete retire due to excessive tax rates or their disagreement with the tax structures athletes face. If you know of one, I'm more than interested to hear their stories behind their decisions.

It's not like the tax structure became complicated because of James Shields contract. Every athlete faces similar complications. You chose to pick Shields contract as a talking point because it's recent and probably because he signed in California. Due to him signing in California he faces a higher state income tax than had he signed somewhere else. Your latest argument is irrelevant because his tax structure would be the same wherever he played, with the only difference being state income tax.

When I brought up the points about him signing in San Diego due to reasons that weren't necessarily financial (proximity to family, weather, direction of team, etc) you said your argument was about federal taxes. When it was pointed out that federal tax liabilities are the same for all athletes you know turned in the direction of the complexity of the tax code.

I don't think anyone disagrees with you that the tax code and regulations are ridiculously absurd and complicated.

Your claim that James Shields, and James Shields alone, is getting screwed by taxes, and your reasoning behind it, is flawed. You're all over the map with your arguments. The evidence you use to support your claims are weak at best.

Face it, it's tough to be "screwed by taxes" when you voluntarily sign a contract that pays you millions. Especially when you had other options to pay less in taxes. He voluntarily signed up to pay more in state taxes to be closer to his family. It's called "Marginal Rate of Substitution," with one good being happiness and the other being money. Considering he still makes more in absolute terms than the other offers he was reported to have, I think it's safe to say he maxed out his utility on this one. Tough to be screwed when that happens.

Just because I waited until this story to come out doesn't mean I think his story is the only one that concerns me. Of course I believe all or most athletes deal with the same issue.

And your assertion that because he and others haven't retired over this heavy taxation is both intellectually dishonest and asinine.

Because he has soo much money left over after the government gets done raping him doesn't mean that he hasn't been financially sodomized. I'm sure once you think about the position you've taken, and the fact that if you were in his shoes you'd all the sudden do an about face, you may change your mind now and save at least some face.

The reason you see no frown on his face now is because he knows he would get no sympathy. Like I said, that doesn't mean his azz isn't bleeding.

In post #27 I state that I think the tax rate you stated as your limit, (in other threads you quoted this rate as being acceptable and fair) was too high. I don't think he should have to pay nearly that much. However, he isn't getting "screwed". If he thought he was, he would have probably opted to play in another state. Especially if he thought that his tax rate was more important than being closer to his family.

Obviously, given that Shields himself stated this, being closer to his home in So. Cal was more important than his state income tax rate. I guess marginal rate of substitution is a lost concept to you.

Your arguments about where he plays games is irrelevant since he would face a similar obligation wherever he signed.

I would gladly trade places with James Shields right now, tax obligation and all. Would you? I guess you wouldn't since you think he is "getting screwed". I doubt I'll get an honest answer from you. I'm sure you'll just deflect that one or avoid it all together.

Honestly with you assertion that he should be subject to a 45% tax rate, I should probably be asking why do you want to screw James Shields so much? I think he should be paying a lot less. Your liberal side is showing again. Better jump back in that conservative closet.

You sure do have an infatuation for sodomy and anal bleeding though. Discover a new hobby recently?

    I know right?

bowslit gets really weird as he starts to unravel...

its funny how conservative closets cases like him  fold like a lawn chair in a real discussion and spend more time deflecting and avoiding questions and playing childish games than simply engaging in the dialog...

hopefully raiders or some one else will come in to bail him out because this is yet another thread that has completely blown up in his face...

well at least that is what it looks like so far

If I was running any of the teams in no/low tax states like Texas and Florida, I would make sure the athlete and agent knew how much extra the player would pocket playing for my team vs a team from Cali or NY/NJ. Money talks and millions talk louder.

Actually I said 45% was my limit and you did say you think that is way too high but you neglected to say a specific number.

I also think I was very clear that I didn't care what the reasoning he used to make his decision it doesn't matter.

My original statement was something along the lines of..."does the government really need that much?"

While I do believe the direction you chose to take your comments was profoundly clever, it was far from the theme I was looking for.

So I'll as again since you failed to answer correctly up to this point.

Does the goobermint really need that much?

Please try to stay within that aspect of the subject this time.

    Thanx in advance.

p.s. I think that means that darryl will have to take his premature declaration of victory back again. Nothing he isn't used to.

Considering I said I thought your tax rate was too high, no the government doesn't need that much. I don't know what a "goobermint" is. Maybe some nine year old kid can answer that one.

I must have been distracted with your continuous argument over Shield's federal tax rate (which applies to all athletes), the tax structure for athletes (again, applies to all athletes), your failed argument about the reasons he decided to sign in San Diego (yes it does matter if you're arguing that he is getting screwed), and your disturbing insistence to continually mention sodomy and anal bleeding.

Just face it, your arguments were all over the map with a majority of them being wrong.

As you may imagine I disagree. I may have become a bit distracted by your agenda to take the discussion in a different direction, but I was not all over the place and I would love to see specifics on what I was wrong about.

One of us is a hypocrite and it's not me. You can't convince me that if it was you writing out the tax check you'd be smiling and humming 'Proud to be an American'.

One of us is honest about this and the other is...well...lying.

Also, surely you don't think there is only one level of getting screwed.

I can promise you there are many adverbs to that word.

Thanks for playing. Which consolation prize would you like?

One of us is honest about this and the other is...well...lying.

Also, surely you don't think there is only one level of getting screwed.

I can promise you there are many adverbs to that word.

Thanks for playing. Which consolation prize would you like?

I'm tired of explaining the same thing over and over. If you can't comprehend it by now, it's just not going to happen. I led the horse to water, but I can't make you drink it. Maybe if you re-read the thread it might sink in, but I doubt it at this point. This must be what it's like to have a retarded child.

Tired of explaining things that don't pertain to my original comment/question in post #1.

My point is you can be screwed whether you choose door one , two, or three. Door 3 has a smaller screwing apparatus....but...

Thank you again for playing even though you ran out of gas.
