It was bad. But I was lucky. I was in university at the time so although it was all over the headlines in the papers unemployment and a recession really didn't affect us in college. I paid my way through by reffing hoops and umping baseball/fastball back then.
For some reason the leagues grew as people had a LOT of free time on their hands.
