The decision to downgrade debt was influenced by “the increase over more than a decade in government debt and interest payment ratios to levels that are significantly higher than similarly rated sovereigns,” Moody’s said in a statement.
Moving forward, Moody’s said it expects US borrowing needs to continue to rise and for it to weigh heavily on the economy as a whole.
