"Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday that Canada's Governor General has allowed him to suspend Parliament, postponing a no-confidence vote from his opponents he was likely to lose."
"Had Governor General Michaelle Jean -- who represents Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as head of state -- denied the request, Monday's vote would have likely brought down Harper's government, less than two months after his Conservative Party strengthened its minority position in federal elections."
I thought the "Governor General" was a purely non-political honorary position in the Canadian government like the Queen is in England?

She's or he is a safety valve in the parliamentary system which is rarely used. Harper has every right to do what he did. Parliament will return in January 27 and Harper government will be defeated and the Three Stooges will take over with Curly running the BIG BIG SHOW.

Bush-league chickenshit, is the best I can describe it.
And while I'm not a fan of Harper's right-wing party, I will say that I'm not particularly happy with the alternatives either.
But we are in the middle of an economic crisis, and Harper has been putting his own personal pride and motivations ahead of actually running this country.
We need a real stimulus package, not that half-assed crap that they tabled last week. All that was just some cost-cutting bullshit to poke a finger in the eye of his enemies while the country sinks.
Do I like the idea of a coalition?
Not particularly. But at least they appear ready to deal with the current economic crisis.
I think Harper is more worried that he'll be a historical embarrassment to get tossed out of his job after two months.
But he is ignoring the fact that this move makes him look more like Nero. The country doesn't have two months to deal with these problems, and he just made the situation far worse than any coalition could have.
Dumb. Dumb. Longterm historical blunder. Dumb.
The only positive in this for me is that I make my money from American dollars and this situation is going to make the Canadian dollar tumble like an avalanche.

The sad thing is that I regularly tell Americans that the one thing about Canada's parliamentary system that works is that it is designed to not allow somebody like Bush abuse the system.
My theory was that, since we don't actually vote for a leader (rather a party) it allows us to oust the leader at any given time and not cause a crisis.
But Harper has managed to prove me wrong.
Sure, we'll still be able to oust him next year if we really want, but by then it'll probably be too late and he will have already allowed the country to spiral into a major recession.
Lesson: All political systems suck!
