Proud Boys celebrate
after Trump's debate callout

The Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, pledged allegiance to President
Trump on Tuesday night after he told the group to "stand back and stand by"
during the first presidential debate.

Many people on social media who identify with the group echoed that
language, saying they were "standing down and standing by."
One known social media account for the group made
"Stand back. Stand by" part of its new logo.

On their account on the social media app Telegram, the Proud Boys appeared
to take the statement as marching orders.
"Standing down and standing by sir," the account wrote.

Proud Boys organizer Joe Biggs also posted after the debate that he was
"standing by," and he said the president "basically said to go f--- them up."

"President Trump told the proud boys to stand by because someone needs
to deal with ANTIFA... well sir! we're ready!!" Biggs wrote.

Trumps' comments drew widespread condemnation on social media.

The irony. It is now fairly clear that the “super spreader” event that has, so far,
infected the president, the first lady, at least three Republican senators, Chris Christie,
Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager and multiple members of Trump’s staff
- now including White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany -
was the Sept. 26 spike-the-ball event in the Rose Garden launching
Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court bid and inside events related to
 the Rose Garden ceremony.
Had Republicans stood by their own “Garland Rule” and decided not to try and 
force through a Supreme Court nomination a few weeks before the election,
none of this would have happened.

climbs to the highest level in 14 years

New York (CNN Business)America's trade deficit widened to more than $67 billion in August,
rising to its highest level in 14 years, the Census Bureau reported on Tuesday.

The deficit has rapidly expanded from $37 billion in February.
Foreign trade was hit hard by lockdown efforts, and exports still haven't recovered
to their pre-pandemic levels, experts said.
"The turnaround in the economy's fortunes from the quickest downturn in history
has seen consumers and businesses rushing out to buy more imported goods while
America's trading partners are buying less of ours and this has led the monthly deficit
to explode to near record levels," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at MUFG.

Washington - The ousted director of the office involved in developing a coronavirus
vaccine has now resigned from his post at the National Institutes of Health, charging that
the Trump administration "ignores scientific expertise, overrules public health guidance
and disrespects career scientists."

Rick Bright filed an extensive whistleblower complaint this spring alleging that his
early warnings about the coronavirus were ignored and that his
caution at ineffective hydroxychloroquine led to his removal.

Trump is nation's single largest spreader
of disinformation, two studies say

“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is the largest spreader of specific and important
types of misinformation today,” said Graham Brookie, director of the Atlantic Council's
Digital Forensic Research Lab.

Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center analyzed 55,000 online media stories, 5 million tweets
and 75,000 posts on public Facebook pages with millions of interaction and concluded
that Trump and his reelection campaign, using Twitter, press briefings and television
interviews, is driving peaks in attention to disinformation around mail-in voting,
absentee balloting and election rigging, according to research published last week.

A separate study out of Cornell University last week found that Trump is the
"single largest" transmitter of misinformation surrounding COVID-19,
hawking false "miracle cures" and dubious claims about the origins of the virus.

Another failed promise by Trump to reduce trade deficit.  Trump manufactures a fake crisis so that he can pretend to fix it. But most economists agree US trade deficits aren't necessarily bad.  Also deficits aren't the result of bad deals as he claims.  Deficits occur naturally because Americans buy more than what they produce.  Rich nations buy more than poorer nations.  A trade surplus isn't necessarily good for economy.  In 1930s depression, US had a trade surplus.

walked out of that '60 Minutes' interview

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump abruptly ended an interview with Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes"
and refused to return for a second interview alongside Vice President Mike Pence.
Why?
CNN's Kaitlan Collins and Khalil Abdallah explain:
"Trump walked out of the interview because he was frustrated with Stahl's line of questioning,
one source said. Another person said the bulk of the interview was focused on coronavirus."

Apparently, Stahl was asking hard (and fair!) questions about Trump's handling of Covid-19,
which has sickened more than 8 million Americans and killed more than 221,000.
Because Trump rarely is forced out of his fantasy bubble, he can't take the heat when
real reporters ask him real questions.
So he took his ball and went home.

President Donald Trump continued his dishonesty blitz in an interview
with Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes."

Despite Stahl's persistent efforts to challenge him, Trump made false or
misleading claims about several topics on which he has been frequently
deceptive in recent months -- most notably the coronavirus pandemic.
We counted at least 16 false or misleading claims in the extended footage ,
10 of them pandemic-related.

Taiwan on Thursday marked 200 straight days
without recording any locally transmitted Covid-19 infections.

The island, which last saw a new local case on April 12, has recorded 554 total
coronavirus infections -- just 55 of them locally transmitted, according to the CDC.

began screening passengers arriving from Wuhan and put in place additional
travel restrictions before Beijing public acknowledged the gravity of the outbreak.

As much of the world waited for more information, Taiwan activated its CECC,
which coordinates different ministries in an emergency, and the military was
brought in to boost the production of face masks and other personal protective
equipment.
