July 14, 2021 Update: U.S. Billionaires Pandemic Wealth Gains: $1.8 Trillion; Wealth gain could pay for President’s family investment plan
Over the last 16 months, since the formal beginning of the pandemic lockdown, the combined wealth of 713 U.S. billionaires has surged by $1.8 trillion, a gain of almost 60 percent. The total combined wealth of U.S. billionaires increased from $2.9 trillion on March 18, 2020 to $4.7 trillion on July 9, 2021.
Billionaire wealth has steadily increased since 1990, but one-third of their wealth gains have occurred during the pandemic. U.S. Billionaire wealth increased 19-fold over the last 31 years, from an inflation adjusted $240 billion in 1990 to $4.7 trillion in 2021.
April 15, 2021 Update: U.S. Billionaire Pandemic Wealth Increases by $1.6 Trillion, or 55%; Represents One-third of Gains over the Last 31 Years.
Whether measured over 13 months or 31 years, the growth of U.S. billionaire wealth is both astounding and troubling based on Forbes data as of April 12, 2021. Billionaire wealth growth has perversely accelerated over the 13 months of global pandemic. But the piling up of fortunes at the top has proceeded at a rapid clip for decades even as the net worth of working Americans lagged and public services deteriorated.

Indeed, ordinary Americans have not fared as well as billionaires over the past 11 months:
- Over 28 million have fallen ill with the virus and more than half a million have died from it. [Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center]
- Collective work income of rank-and-file private-sector employees—all hours worked times the hourly wages of the entire bottom 82% of the workforce—declined by almost 3% in real terms from mid-March to mid-January, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
- Over 76 million lost work between Mar. 21, 2020, and Jan. 23, 2021. [S. Department of Labor]
- 18 million were collecting unemployment on Jan. 30, 2021. [S. Department of Labor]
- Nearly 100,000 businesses have permanently closed. [Yelp/CNBC]
- 12 million workers had likely lost employer-sponsored health insurance during the pandemic as of August 26, 2020. [Economic Policy Institute]
- Some 24 million adults reported between Jan. 20-Feb. 1 that their household had not had enough food in the past week. From Jan. 6-18, between 7 and 11 million children lived in a household where kids did not eat enough because the household could not afford to fully feed them. [Center on Budget & Policy Priorities (CBPP)]
- 2 million adults—almost 1 in 5 renters—reported in January being behind in their rent. [CBPP]
Because of long-standing racial and gender disparities, low-wage workers, people of color and women have suffered disproportionately in the combined medical and economic crises. Latinos are more likely to become infected with Covid-19 and Blacks to die from the disease than are white people. Billionaires are overwhelmingly white men.

You'll likely get a response of a clip from a CNN article saying the economy is fine, there's nothing to worry about, inflation is transitory, just look at the stock market, everyone is up. Meanwhile Democrats still trying to get the debt ceiling raised because their only idea on how to fix shit is to print and spend more money. More money that will eventually come from tax payers. Democrats idea= money printer go brrr, taxes go brrrrr, inflation goes brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. You'll be paying $85.00 for a loaf of bread if these numbskulls were in complete charge.

not really sure why all the rumplickers get their collective panties wet whenever the dow rises to a new record high

@KellyM_1964
The dow is really irrelevant to what's actually happening with the economy. Sorry, but CNN doesn't give you the facts and truths about the future. Market is good today, and was good yesterday, but what about next week, or the next month, or the following month? Do you think it's going to keep breaking records? Do you know why Democrats want the debt ceiling raised? The gov't is close to maxing out their credit cards and they are trying to open new ones by passing the debts to new cards so they can keep spending more money then what is returned. Giving people free money is NOT going to change the economy for the better in the long run. In the short run, yes. But the long run? We'll see.

@Midnight1
I'm not angry, I'm just in disbelief at how these clowns think the S&P is representative of a healthy economy and financial system. The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting more poor. They have no clue what is going on right now and if they'd open their tiny little closed off minds from their echo chamber they might teach themselves a thing or two about the real world.
I hear you though, I'll try to keep it together a little more. Maybe just cut & paste everything and not comment or involve myself in any critical thinking discussion.....

@BigGame90
GOP is saying they are not going to vote to raise the debt limit and are putting the onus all on the Dems. Dems are saying they are going to call their bluff cause they don't think they'll do it and risk defaulting.
It would be something else to see that actually happen. Bad yes. Could we recover from it long term? idk.
