IS IT UNAUSTRALIAN TO BACK INDIA?

Doctor Turf on SEN this morning said he will back India for the series, the other host said it was Un Australian to bet against your country.  I have to agree with Doctor Turf here, if there is value why not.  What are your thoughts?

I agree AUSTRALIA may struggle. I will cheer for them all the way. NO QUESTION. But my hard earned will go elsewhere.

If you'd backed the Australian (mostly at live in-game odds) right when they looked on the verge of defeat over the past 10 years or so you'd have long since retired on the winnings. They've had an incredible knack of winning from tough positions.
 
But a lot of superstar quality that sparked those past heroics, are no longer part of the team.
 
Must admit I couldn't wait for the series odds to come out for this one, but I had a fanciful notion that Australia would be posted up as slight favourites or at least on level pegging with India.
 
Looking at the prices, I think they're pretty much spot on.
 
Have also heard that the pitch for this week's first test may favour (relatively speaking for Indian conditions) the quick bowlers, so this may favour the Aussies and mask their serious dearth of experience in the spin bowling department

Australia shouldn't even bother playing a spinner, just play the 4 quicks.
 
I fear for Jason Krejza. As to White it's a joke he is even being considered as a viable spin option, he is more of a batsman than a bowler

agree, why give the indians what they're used to dining out on ? ie mediocre spin bowling.

Craig White's selection in an Australian test side would signal the death of cricket in this country, his leggies are fruit for the sideboard

Useless is a bit harsh. He is a part time leggy and genuine lower-order power hitter, absolutely suited to Twenty 20 or ODI cricket.

He is certainly not a test player though, that I agree with

Spot on. Why take a second rate spinner at all? Didn't Krejza fail to take a wicket in the warm up match? The Indians will be champing at the bit to get at him and if his confidence is a little shaky now, it will be obliterated by the end of this series, if indeed he plays more than one test.

Run with 4 quicks, at least you'll know you can make them uncomfortable.

the windies dominated everywhere for 20 years with a pure pace attack, and occasional spin from a part-timer. at the moment all our good bowlers are quicks (lee, johnson, clark, watson, and bollinger, not to mention nathan bracken who seems destined to be overlooked forever more for test cricket). id go in with either 5 quicks (watson batting at 6) or 4 quicks (watson at 7, haddin at 8, katich in at 6, bollinger being the quick to miss out). bugger having a crap spinner just because we have to always have a spinner in the team. to be honest, i have confidence that michael clarke and katich would be more successful with their left arm part time twirling than any of the spinners named in the squad.

I don't think Mitchell Johnson belongs in the category of "good bowler".

This guy should be back in QCA learning how to play the game, not stinking it up on the test arena.

I can't believe he keeps getting selected considering the glaring flaws in his technique. He bowls side-arm crap. His wrist position at delivery is appalling and the reason why he bowls so much CUSTARD two and a half feet wide of off stump.

He's a nothing bowler - bowls in the 130-135 km/hr range (despite being hailed as ferociously fast ) and doesn't move the ball back into the right hand batsman, which any left arm quick should be able to do.

Watch this guy get carved to bits over the next couple of weeks

Bouncy wickets and a hairy ticket and Johnson is gone.

I'm moreso disappointed that nobody seems to be working with Johnson to remedy some of this technical stuff. How can a bloke be allowed to bowl the ball out the side of his hand and play for Australia ?? I have no doubt if Johnson could get his wrist position correct he could be a terrific bowler because he'd suddenly be able to swing the ball into the right hand batsman.
